Rory punches you right in your shoulder when you tell her.

"What the hell?!" you exclaim, clutching your shoulder with a grimace.

"You're taking her back? Just like that?" Your friend - your best friend - laughs right in your face.

"No!"

"Um? Yes!"

You let out this grating sigh, pinching the bridge of your nose. "We're just... hanging out."

"Hanging out or banging out?"

You cringe. "Ew, that's not even... god just shut up. And we're not getting back together, okay?"

"I thought you hated her."

"I thought I did, too," you mutter. "But I..." Closing your eyes, you shake your head, unable to even explain it. You know how bad this sounds, how wrong it all is.

How are you to explain that, no matter what, you are simply drawn to Jennie? That she has this allure, this inexplicable hold on you.

You wonder what is the point in love is if it isn't unconditional.

-

She's already sitting on the top step of the porch when you walk up.

You can't help but smile. "Knock, knock."

Jennie's head snaps up, eyes wide and mouth parted. "You're here early."

You stand there, towering over her with a soft smile when you shrug. Of course you're early, but how are you to tell her that it is because you couldn't just sit around in your house anymore, waiting until you could leave? "Ready?" You don't want to point out the fact that she's already waiting for you, despite how early you are.

She tilts her head. "Isn't it kind of early to see the stars? The sun has barely set."

You hold a hand out, eyeing for her to take it so you could pull her up on her feet. "I thought we could get something to eat first. Are you hungry?"

Jennie blinks, disoriented by the weight of your hand in hers. "Sure," she managed to get out.

"Sure?" you ask amusedly.

"I kind of just got back from dinner with Alison," she admits guiltily, sheepish smile on her face.

You chuckled. "That's alright. If you're not hungry, we could kill time with something else? Or I could just come back in an hour or two?"

The thought of losing time with you spikes her heart. "No, we can... We can do something else."

"Okay," you smiled, unable to let go of her hand.

Almost awkwardly, the two of you stand in front of each other, clasped hands between you two.

"What do you want to do?"

Jennie shrugs, ignoring the wave of sadness when you finally let go and your hand floats down to your side. "Not sure."

"Anything left on that list of yours?"

She frowns, head tilting in confusion. "List?"

Maybe you shouldn't have asked, shouldn't have brought up such a token from your past. "The list you made," you respond quietly. "The one with all the things you wanted to do?"

"Right," Jennie mumbles, shocked that you remembered that, even more shocked that she didn't. "I don't think we had anything left on that."

"Ah," you let out, somewhat satisfied. "Left to our own devices, then."
