I'm sitting at my makeshift desk in the corner of our cozy living room, the soft hum of my laptop filling the air. Adrien is upstairs, working on a campaign for his latest modeling gig. The house is usually a sanctuary of order, but today? Today is anything but calm.
"Mama!" Mia shouts from the playroom, a hint of mischief in her voice.
"What is it, sweetie?" I call back, trying to focus on this blog post about parenting, though I know interruptions are inevitable.
"We're playing!" Mia giggles, the excitement palpable, her small voice filled with exuberance.
"Oh, really? You and your little helpers?"
"Chawie and Channy are here too!" she exclaims, her words what I can only describe as delightful jumbles. Chawie and Channy—Charlie and Chandler—are two-year-old whirlwinds of energy.
"Mia, what kind of game are you playing?" I ask, half-dreading the answer.
"The bestest game ever!" she shouts. "We're hiding!"
Hiding? My heart drops slightly. "Where are you hiding?"
"In the closet!" she announces proudly.
I peek into the hallway and see a trail of toys leading to the closet door, slightly ajar. Just as I'm about to say something sensible, I hear a muffled giggle from inside.
"Shh! Channy!" Mia whispers. "They can hear us!"
"Me no wanna be found!" Chandler's voice spills out, followed by a squeal.
"Mama's gonna find us!" Charlie adds, which only sets Mia off into another fit of giggles.
I groan softly, exchanging a knowing glance with Adrien as he walks down the stairs. His golden hair glows in the light, effortlessly perfect as always. "Is it too early for a coffee break?" he muses, trying to keep a straight face.
"I think we're going to need something stronger than coffee," I reply, stifling laughter as I picture the chaotic scene behind the closet door.
"Mama! Come play with us! We're having the bestest fun!" Mia calls, her face lighting up the moment I step further into the playroom.
"What are you three up to?" Adrien asks, eyebrows raised as he joins me.
"A little game of hide and seek," I respond, motioning towards the closet.
"Sounds adorable," he says, trying to bite back a smile as we listen to the muffled chaos behind the door. "Do you think they know what hide and seek really is?"
"They might have their own version," I reply, just as I hear Chandler whisper, "Don't let Mama find us, Chawie. We're sneaky!"
Adrien and I exchange glances filled with amusement. Sometimes I wonder if the twins' antics stem from the level of mischief their big sister encourages rather than pure innocence.
"Okay, let's check in," Adrien suggests, pulling the closet door open just a crack.
The sight in front of us is priceless. Mia is trying to squeeze in beside the twins, who are unsuccessfully attempting to conceal themselves among the shoes and winter coats.
"Found you!" I declare, throwing my hands up in an exaggerated manner.
"Ahhh!" Mia squeals, bursting into laughter. "We're not ready! Again, again!"
"But it's not fair! Mama found us!" Chandler protests, her wide eyes filled with mock outrage.
"Next time, we will hide better!" Charlie chimes in with enthusiasm, completely unfazed by this round. "Right, Channy?"
"Yes!" she agrees, throwing her hands up dramatically, completely throwing the rules of hide-and-seek out the window.
"Okay, you two little cheeky monkeys," Adrien chuckles, kneeling down to be at eye-level with the twins. "Let's find a better place to play, shall we?"
"Mama, can we go outside?" Mia suggests, hopping up and down, her curly hair bouncing with every movement.
"Sure, let's see what kind of mischief we can create outside!"
As we head to the backyard, I muse over how chaotic this day has become, but I wouldn't trade this laughter and light for anything in the world. The squeals of my little ones fill the air as we step outside, where adventure awaits us in the form of sunlight, grass, and endless opportunities for playful mayhem.
"Chawie! Channy! Let's create a secret club!" Mia declares, her excitement contagious, and in this moment, it feels like everything is perfectly right.
