I wake up to a sharp pain in my belly, and my heart races. The clock on the wall blinks 1:13 AM, the house is dark and still, except for the rhythmic sounds of Adrien's breathing beside me. It's too early. I tighten my grip on the sheets, willing the pain to subside. But it doesn't.
"Adrien!" I hiss, shaking him, "Adrien, wake up!"
"Mmm..." he grumbles, pulling the blankets closer as if they can shield him from my distress.
"Adrien!" I say again, louder this time, "Wake up! I think I'm going into labor!"
His eyes snap open, taking a moment to register my words. "What? Now? Like...now, now?"
"Yes! Right now!" I push myself up, a wave of discomfort washing over me. "Mia needs to wake up. We need to get to the hospital."
"Okay, okay!" His voice is a mix of sleep and urgency. "What do you need me to do?"
"Hurry! We have to get Mia!" I swing my legs off the bed, my feet hitting the cold floor like ice. "I don't want her to miss it!"
"Right!" He scrambles out of bed, and I can see the panic turning into determination on his face. "I'll get her!"
As he runs towards Mia's room, I take a moment to breathe. This might just be the biggest moment of our lives.
A few moments later, I hear Adrien's soft voice through the door. "Mia, sweetheart, it's time to wake up!"
"Mama! Dada!" I hear her little footsteps patter across the floor. Just a moment later, she bursts into our room, her blond hair a wild halo around her sleepy face.
"Mia, you're a big sister now!" Adrien tells her, his face glowing with excitement.
"I a big sister!" she squeals, eyes wide, as she rushes towards me.
"You're going to meet your baby brother or sister!" I manage to say through the pain.
"Baby!" she giggles, jumping up and down on the spot. "I help!"
"Of course, you will, baby girl!" I smile at her, my heart swelling. She looks just like her daddy with those sparkling green eyes. "But first, we need to get to the hospital, okay?"
"Okay!" She nods vigorously, her enthusiasm contagious. I can never be mad at her energy.
"While I get dressed, can you go get your favorite toy to bring with us?" I ask her as I grab a shirt and struggle to get it over my growing belly.
"Uh-huh! Toy!" she chants, charging out of the room as I begin to feel another contraction.
"Adrien!" I gasp, clutching the edge of the bed. "Hurry up!"
"We're coming!" he calls back as he helps Mia find her beloved plushie.
Mia reappears, bear clutched tightly in her tiny hands, bouncing on her toes. "I got it! I got my bear!"
"Great job, Mia!" I smile, trying to mask the pain as I hurry into the hallway. "Now, we need to go!"
Adrien takes hold of Mia's hand while I grab my bag, and we shuffle down the hall, my heart racing with excitement and anxiety.
At the Hospital
The car ride is a blur of flashing streetlights and my occasional gasps of pain. Mia is a whirlwind of excitement in the backseat.
"I a big sister!" she keeps repeating, and I can't help but laugh.
"That's right, baby! You'll be the best big sister!" I reply, trying to focus on her joy as the contractions hit harder and faster.
Once we arrive, we rush through the hospital doors. I can't help but grip Adrien's arm, searching for any sort of stability as we step into the bright fluorescent lights of the waiting room.
"Let's get you checked in," he says, and somehow, as they start to prepare me for labor, the excitement overtakes the anxiety.
"Are you ready, mama?" one of the nurses asks as she guides me to a bed.
"I think so." I look over at Adrien and Mia. "Just don't leave me, okay?"
"Never," Adrien promises, his eyes reassuring.
After a bit of waiting, the real work begins, and we're in this together. The hours stretch on, but I'm determined to stay focused on my goal: meeting our new baby (or babies!).
"Okay, you're doing great, Y/n," Adrien encourages. "Just breathe. Remember what we practiced?"
"I... I know," I stutter between contractions, but every time I breathe out, I feel like I can give a little more.
"Mama, you okay?" Mia asks, her big green eyes full of concern.
"I'm okay, sweetheart. Just working really hard to meet your siblings," I assure her, leaning back against the pillow.
"I a big sister! I help!" she declares, and it gives me some strength.
Eventually, after what seems like an eternity of labor, the doctor comes in. "Okay, Y/n, are you ready to push?"
I nod, trying to channel the energy Mia has.
After hours of breathing, pushing, and moments where all I can do is focus, the cries of newborns fill the room.
Adrien's face lights up. "We did it!"
I look down, breathless, and see two tiny bundles in the nurses' arms—a boy and a girl. They bring them closer, and I catch my breath again. "Charlie and Chandler," I whisper, overwhelmed with love.
"Mama!" Mia exclaims, her enthusiasm peaking again as she runs over to us. "They so tiny! I a big sister now!"
"Yes, you are. You did it—you're the best big sister!" I say, holding Chandler close, while Adrien cradles Charlie.
And just like that, together we're officially a family of four—a little chaotic, but that's the beauty of it all.
