Walking through the sterile hallways of the hospital, I felt strangely out of place. This wasn’t where I belonged. But I kept going, following the directions I had been given to Sai’s room.
When I reached his room, I paused for a moment outside the door. What was I doing here? Why was I about to walk into this room and see him? It didn’t make sense. But despite that, I pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Sai was lying in the hospital bed, his arm in a cast and bandages covering part of his face. He looked weak, vulnerable. It was a stark contrast to the confident, charming person I was used to seeing.
When he saw me, his face lit up with that same irritatingly bright smile. “Kazuki! You came to see me?”
I stood there, unsure of what to say. Why had I come here? I didn’t know. But seeing him like this… it stirred something inside me. Something that felt strangely like pity, even though I didn’t want to feel that way.
“Yeah,” I finally said, keeping my voice neutral. “Just wanted to see how you were doing.”
Sai’s smile grew wider. “I’m okay, just a little banged up. But it means a lot that you came. I didn’t think you would.”
