Chapter Two

6:00 PM

I was already dressed in white baggy jeans and a white baggy shirt. Underneath, I wore a black tight long-sleeve top. I combed my curly hair and packed it in a ponytail. I didn’t wear makeup, just a very light foundation and lip gloss. I placed the gift box in my bag and walked out of the house.

I had told my parents beforehand that I was going to a birthday party, and they accepted it. They were worried about Claire because she hadn’t come home after school, but I wasn't surprised.

I took my bike and rode to his house. From outside, you could hear the music, and when I walked in, loud music greeted my ears. Students were dancing their hearts out, girls dressed in mini clothes, drinking alcohol, and making out with boys. I pushed past the crowd and walked upstairs to his room, excited to see him.

I gently opened the door, and what I saw shocked my world. My boyfriend was making out with my sister. They were kissing and rubbing each other, his hands exploring her body.

“Shane, what the hell is this?” I said, and my voice made them both turn towards me. They were both shocked to see me.

“Hanna, what are you doing here?” I heard Shane say, and I glared at him.

“Shane, I asked a question. What are you doing with my sister?” I said, trying to ignore the hurt in my voice.

“Look, I’m sorry you had to see this, but I can’t be your boyfriend. You have to understand that I am perfect and need someone perfect to stand beside me,” he said.

“Look, sister, get a hint and buzz off. Shane likes me now. I’m literally perfect,” my sister said.

“I can’t right now,” I said as I turned to leave. I walked down the stairs and was about to open the door to leave when I heard Shane’s loud voice.

“I’m breaking up with you, Hanna. You’re not the type of girl any boy should date. I can’t believe you thought I, the most popular boy, would date someone like you, a freaking mute. It was all a bet. You’re boring, and kissing you is like kissing dead wood. You’re a fucking dork. I can’t be seen with someone like you. You disgust me. I love your sister, and we’ve been dating for months now,” Shane said.

The music suddenly turned off, and all eyes were on me. Talk about public humiliation. Just then, Claire walked by his side. Everyone burst into mocking laughter. I wouldn’t lie; those words were like arrows in my chest.

“You’re really dumb. Shane and I have literally been dating for months now, and you’re such a fool not to notice,” Claire said, and everyone laughed.

I looked at Claire, thinking of a million ways I could strangle her neck, but it wasn’t worth it. I turned around to leave, people calling me different names like ‘coward,’ ‘weak,’ ‘stupid’...

I walked home that night, and when I got home, Mom threw different questions at me, seeing how pale I looked. “Mom, I need space,” was all I said as I went to my room and slammed the door shut.

I felt weak and humiliated. Part of me didn’t want to go to school tomorrow because that’s what was going to be trendy, but I just had to. I sighed and regretted ever thinking Shane could be with someone like me. I’ll forever be alone. That night, I cried myself to sleep.

The Next Morning...

I woke up feeling weak. I took my bath and got dressed for school. I brushed my hair, packed it in a bun, wore my glasses, and went down for breakfast. There I saw Claire sitting down, staring at me with a smile. I just walked past her and sat on my chair. I ate my food, pretending like nothing had happened.

After eating my food, I got up to leave. “Honey, how many times have I told you to wait for your sister? Do you want her to go to school alone?” I heard my mom say. I didn’t have the strength to argue. I just walked out of the house.

I decided to walk to school today since I was very early. I got to school, and boy, news spread like wildfire. There were posters everywhere about me, the bet, and the breakup. Everyone stared at me with mocking smiles, some snickering behind me as I strode through the hallway. All everyone talked about was the epic breakup. They even made memes about it. I hated my life there, and I just decided to act as invisible as I could.

I walked up to my locker. Different posters were on it, and stupid notes like ‘ugly duckling,’ ‘wood mouth,’ and other kinds of names. I sighed, opened my locker, took out my books, and went straight to class. My classmates were the definition of brutal.

“Hey Hanna, how was your night? Did you cry yourself to sleep?” a girl with a sharp voice said. She was Chloe, a rich brat. I just ignored her and went to my seat, but she and her minions walked towards me.

“So, how does it feel to have Shane break up with you like that? Now you’re back to being a nobody,” one of her minions said. “Oh, it was crazy. Did you see her face last night? She was about to cry,” another one said.

“I wish she did. It would have been epic,” Chloe said, but I just ignored them. Fighting with them is a waste of time. Chloe then slightly pushed my head.

“We’re talking to you, idiot,” she said, but I did not answer. She pushed my head again.

“What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue?” she said, but I remained silent. The other girl then pushed me with force, which made me fall off my chair.

“Stupid mutt. Come on, Chloe, we have something to do,” the other girl said, and they laughed like evil witches on their way out. I quietly stood up and sat back on my chair. I placed my book on the table. I just didn’t feel like reading, so I relaxed my head on the table. All the friends I made when I was dating Shane turned their backs on me. They were only friends with me to get closer to Shane.
