Chapter Three
Classes went by normally, and soon it was break time. I walked into the busy cafeteria, heading to my usual spot far away from everyone. But then I saw Claire and two of her friends sitting there. 'What is she doing here?' I asked myself, since Claire was popular and had a spot at the popular girls’ table.
"Claire, please leave. I want to eat alone," I said, placing emphasis on the word "alone."
"Hanna, are you mad at me because Shane chose me? I have the right to be happy, and he chose the right twin. What are you expecting me to do?" Claire said with a smirk.
"Do I look like I care?" I asked, already starting to get pissed off by Claire’s behavior. To be honest, I did care.
"Of course you do. I saw how broken you were at the party. You didn’t even stay to witness how amazing things were," Claire said. "Shane needs a better, beautiful girlfriend, and that can never be you," she added, just to piss me off, and it did.
"You know what, Claire? You can have him. He’s my remnant. Have the leftovers for all I care because that’s all you’ll ever be a second to me," I said to Claire, loud enough for everyone to hear, which made her angry. She stood up and shoved me so hard that I landed on my butt on the hard floor, my spaghetti spilling all over.
"How dare you say that to me, stupid fool!" Claire was fuming with anger. I stood up and slapped the stupidity out of her. I slapped her so hard that she tumbled backward, losing her balance and falling. Her minions rushed towards us. Suddenly, blood began dripping from her nose. I was too angry to care.
"Oh my god, my nose, it's bleeding!" Claire wailed like a baby. I walked out of the cafeteria and went straight to the bathroom to wash off the stains from my skirt. There went my lunch.
I walked back to class, feeling irritated. How could my own twin, my supposed better half, do something like this to me? The class was empty and quiet; everyone was in the cafeteria, and I liked it that way. I knew I was going to get into trouble for slapping Claire, but for now, I was satisfied.
I brought out my novel and began reading since I had no food to eat today. I hadn’t enjoyed ten minutes of my alone time when someone burst open the class door. It was Shane, with a group of boys behind him.
"How dare you touch my girlfriend with your filthy hands!" he screamed at the top of his lungs and walked in front of me. He took my book and tossed it in the bin. I looked up to see his face, the stupid image of him kissing my sister playing in my memory.
"Your girlfriend shoved me first and threw my lunch. Isn’t that enough reason for me to slap her?" I said in a sarcastic tone, laying emphasis on "girlfriend."
"You may think because you're her sister and my ex, you're allowed to do shit with her. I don’t know why I ever dated a stupid, ugly, shapeless, poor thing like you," he said. Those words stung; they hurt me so much that I tried not to show it, but I couldn’t.
Before I could say anything, he told his friends to drag me, and two of them held both my hands and began dragging me out of the class. I tried to break free, but their grip was too strong. They dragged me back to the cafeteria, then to the popular kids’ table where Claire and her stupid friends were seated. She looked at me with a smirk. Shane sat beside her, examining her face. He then kissed her cheek and began caressing her. They both turned to me.
I was forced to kneel in front of them. "Apologize to her right now," I heard Shane say, and I glared at him.
"In your stupid dreams," I said. He walked towards me and pulled my hair so tight that I felt little strands coming off my scalp. I winced in pain.
"Fine then. If you won’t apologize, Claire will pay you back," he said. He let go of my hair and gestured to Claire. She walked toward me and slapped me twice on my cheek. God, it stung so badly, but I refused to be weak. I raised my head to look at her, my pale white face already red.
"Is that all you’ve got?" I asked her, giving her a weak smile. That annoyed her. "Guys, beat her up," she said, and all Shane’s gangster friends began beating me. They punched and hit me, each taking turns. They kicked my stomach to the extent that I began coughing blood. My nose was bleeding, and my mouth as well. I lay on the floor with my hands wrapped around my belly, coughing in pain and making more blood rush out of my mouth.
I looked at my glasses, all smashed. I wasn’t blind, but I couldn’t see far away things clearly. How am I going to buy a new pair? I asked myself while coughing like a sick person. Claire held my hair tight and yanked me up by it. We were now face to face.
"See what you get for messing with me, Sis? Just know that there’s no place in this world for you," Claire said. I just held her hand to release my hair from her grip. She was about to say something else when someone shouted.
"Stop this madness right now!" Claire released my hair as we all turned to look at the voice. It was a girl with a beautiful British accent. It wasn’t pronounced enough to pass as American, but it was a bit noticeable.
