Chapter Forty Two

Sarah

The party my dad threw was held on a private yacht. Everything was set up perfectly. Chloe was there, as was Claire, who had just recently been suspended. Despite the drama swirling around us, the party began.

"I'm really sorry about your suspension," Chloe said to Claire, sipping from her champagne flute.

Claire shrugged nonchalantly. "It’s nothing. What really gets under my skin is that Miss Gemma. She’s such an annoying teacher."

Chloe nodded sympathetically. "Yeah, she has a lot of power at school. Even my dad won’t fire her. He listens to every little thing she says, and it drives me insane."

“But don’t worry,” I chimed in, placing a hand on Claire’s shoulder. “Chloe’s going to talk to her dad. He’ll find a way to smooth things over. For now, let’s just enjoy the party.”

A waiter passed by and brought us some champagne, and we each took a glass. The three of us raised our glasses, and I smiled mischievously. "Here’s to a successful mission," I said, and we clinked our glasses together. We downed the contents in one go, the bubbles fizzing in my throat as I turned to scan the crowd.

That’s when I saw Dominic and Kai standing a little ways off. I made my way over to them, flashing a playful smile. "Aww, you actually came! What are you doing here, Kai?" I asked, curious, since I didn't expect him to tag along.

"He goes wherever I go," Dominic responded, his voice low and serious. There was something in his tone that made me uncomfortable.

"Whatever," I said, waving it off. "Let’s party."

But Dominic wasn’t in the mood to let things slide. "You said something earlier about a 'successful mission.' What was that about?" he asked, his dark eyes locked on me.

My heart skipped a beat. *Oh no, he must have heard.* "It’s nothing," I said, trying to brush it off as casually as possible.

"What do you mean, 'nothing'? Sarah, are you involved in this whole mess just because Hanna was his partner for the project?" Kai cut in, his voice sharp with suspicion.

I played innocent. "What are you talking about? I don’t know what you mean."

Dominic’s expression hardened. "Enough! Hanna is in the hospital, in a coma, fighting for her life, and you’re here, the one who caused her pain, partying like it’s no big deal. What kind of psycho are you?"

I felt the blood drain from my face. "Dom, how could you say that? It wasn’t me! Claire planned all of this, not me!" I protested, but Dominic didn’t back down.

"Yet, you’re helping her escape suspension. You’re a terrible person," Kai added, his voice cold as ice. Without another word, he turned and walked away, Dominic following close behind.

I felt my frustration boil over. "Hey! Dominic, wait! Is this because of Hanna? Do you like her or something?" I shouted after them, desperate for some kind of reaction. But neither of them turned around, leaving me standing there, feeling helpless.

Dominic

I didn’t turn back, even though Sarah was shouting for me to return. I’d had enough of her spoiled, entitled attitude. I stormed off the yacht, Kai walking beside me.

"You coming over to my place?" I asked, hoping to unwind from this disaster of a party.

"I’ll pass," Kai said flatly, and I nodded, understanding that he needed some space.

After dropping him off at his house, I drove home, the events of the night swirling in my mind. When I walked into the house, my mom noticed right away that something was off.

"Dom, you’re home early. Did something happen?" she asked, concern evident in her voice. I just shook my head, not ready to talk about it yet. I flopped down onto the sofa, my head tilted back, staring up at the ceiling. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t stop thinking about Hanna, lying in that hospital bed, fighting for her life. It made me feel powerless.

"What about Hanna? Isn’t she coming over today for your project?" my mom asked, sitting beside me.

I shook my head again. "No, she’s not coming."

"Why not? What happened?" she pressed, worry creeping into her tone.

Taking a deep breath, I finally spoke. "Well, Sarah and Hanna’s twin sister thought it would be funny to pull a stupid prank on her by giving her a cake with peanuts in it—knowing she’s highly allergic. Now she’s in the hospital, in a coma."

My mom and my little sisters, Judy and Dana, gasped in unison. "Oh my God, a coma? That’s serious!" my mom said, clearly horrified. "Why would Sarah do something so cruel?"

"Jealousy, I guess. And her mom paid off the school to keep it quiet," I explained bitterly.

"That’s disgusting. Poor Hanna." My mom sighed deeply, her face filled with concern. "By tomorrow, I’ll arrange for Hanna to be transferred to a VIP hospital. A coma is no joke. We need to make sure she gets the best care possible."

"Yeah," I murmured quietly, my thoughts still a mess. Dana climbed onto the sofa, resting her head on my lap.

"Will I get to see Hanna again?" she asked, her voice soft and filled with worry. It was clear she had grown attached to Hanna over the past few weeks.

"Of course you will," I said, forcing a smile. Dana closed her eyes, seeming a little comforted by my words.

"I’ll call her aunt and let her know what’s going on," my mom said, standing up. "But what about her parents?"

"They’re deadbeats," I said, feeling my anger flare up again. "They didn’t even bother to visit her in the hospital. All they did was beg for her sister, Claire, to be forgiven. That’s it. They didn’t care at all about Hanna."

My mom’s eyes widened in disbelief. "That’s crazy," she muttered, shaking her head. "How could parents be so heartless?"

"Yeah, it’s messed up," I agreed, running a hand through my hair. "No wonder Hanna has such low self-esteem. She grew up in a family where no one cared about her. And at school, she’s constantly bullied. She has no one to lean on, except Jenny."

"I feel so bad for her," my mom said, her voice full of empathy. "Hanna deserves so much better than this."

I nodded in agreement, my heart heavy. I couldn’t stop thinking about her, about everything she had been through. The more I thought about it, the more determined I became to make sure she was okay. She didn’t deserve any of this.

"Don’t worry, Mom," I said quietly. "We’ll take care of her. We’ll make sure she pulls through."
