The lights of the ballroom were soft, casting a warm, golden glow over the gathered crowd. Everyone was dressed to the nines, laughing, mingling, and sipping champagne. I hadn't expected to come to this event, but my best friend had convinced me last minute.

"It'll be fun," she had said. "It's been ages since we've had a night out like this."

So here I was, pretending to enjoy the evening, when in reality, my mind was elsewhere. BSF/N has already disappeared to mingle with her friends. I smoothed down the hem of my dress, glancing around the room, hoping to spot a familiar face—someone to talk to, to pass the time.

But that's when I saw him.

C/N.

He looked almost the same, but time had added a certain maturity to his features. His hair was a bit shorter, and the suit he wore fit him perfectly. He was laughing, leaning against the bar, talking to some of the other attendees. For a second, I froze, my heart skipping a beat. It was like a wave of memories hit me all at once.

We hadn't parted on bad terms, but it had been difficult. Life had taken us in different directions, and at the time, we both knew it wasn't the right moment for us to stay together. We were young, full of ambition, with dreams that took us miles apart. And as much as we had cared about each other, it just wasn't enough to bridge the gap.

But seeing him now, all those years later, made something in me stir—a quiet longing, a "what if" that I hadn't allowed myself to think about in years.

I swallowed hard, debating whether to go say hello or just slip out unnoticed. I wasn't prepared for this. For him.

Before I could make a decision, though, his eyes met mine from across the room. For a moment, everything seemed to stop—the music, the chatter, the world around us. It was just us, locked in this unspoken moment. I saw the flicker of recognition in his eyes, the same emotion I was feeling: surprise, curiosity, and something else, something deeper.

He smiled softly, and before I knew it, he was making his way toward me. I felt my pulse quicken, my heart pounding in my chest. How many times had I imagined this moment? What would I say? What could I say after all this time?

"Y/N," he said when he reached me, his voice warm, familiar. "I wasn't expecting to see you here."

I forced a smile, hoping he wouldn't notice how nervous I suddenly felt. "Same here. It's... been a while."

He nodded, his eyes studying my face, as if he, too, was trying to figure out what to say. "You look amazing."

"So do you," I replied, my voice soft. "How have you been?"

He chuckled lightly, looking down for a moment before meeting my eyes again. "Good. Busy, you know. Work's been crazy." His E/C eyes burn into mine. "How's life treating you?"

I hesitated, wondering how much to tell him. The truth was, I'd moved on—mostly. I'd built a life I was proud of, but seeing him now stirred something that I thought I had buried long ago.

"It's been... good," I said finally. "I've been working a lot too. Trying to balance everything."

He smiled knowingly. "I hear you. It feels like we're all just running from one thing to the next, doesn't it?"

I nodded, and for a moment, we just stood there, the weight of the unspoken between us growing heavier with each passing second. There were so many things I wanted to say, to ask, but I wasn't sure where to start.
