The world had changed overnight. A quiet, eerie stillness settled over everything—an unnatural hush that was both oppressive and terrifying. It wasn't just the absence of sound; it was the ever-present threat that if you made even the slightest noise, they would come.

The creatures were relentless, blind but deadly, hunting with an acute sense of hearing. Survival wasn't just about being strong or fast; it was about being silent. One wrong move, one careless sound, and it was over.

The forest was still, the kind of silence that made every movement feel like a risk. I stepped carefully, my bare feet pressing into the soft sand path we'd laid out months ago to muffle our steps. The trees loomed overhead, their branches swaying gently in the breeze, whispering secrets I could never dare to repeat.

I glanced back to see C/N trailing behind me, his expression as focused as ever. He was a few steps away, scanning the woods like he always did, always on alert. I rolled my eyes, thinking of how serious he always seemed, but in this world, serious was safer.

We hadn't spoken in days, not a single word. It wasn't that we didn't want to; we couldn't. It was safer that way.

I turned back around, trying to concentrate on the path ahead, but something small and hard bounced off the back of my head. I flinched, instinctively ducking, my eyes darting around in panic before realizing it was just an acorn. My gaze snapped up to meet his, wide with disbelief. He was grinning at me, that rare, mischievous glint in his eyes that I hadn't seen in a long time.

C/N pointed to his mouth and mimicked exaggeratedly, whispering, "Gotcha," though no sound escaped his lips. I bit my lip to keep from laughing—God, I missed the sound of it.

I picked up the acorn from the ground and hurled it back at him, barely missing his shoulder. He dodged, the grin spreading wider, and for a split second, it felt like the world wasn't completely broken.

We kept moving, but the atmosphere had shifted, lightened in a way that only C/N could manage. He moved up beside me, our steps perfectly synchronized, and I could feel the unspoken words between us: the teasing, the annoyance, the comfort of knowing someone was right there with me.

Every now and then, he'd bump into me, lightly nudging my arm, and I'd shove him back, playfully but silently, the corners of my mouth twitching. It was a strange sort of happiness, this quiet game of ours.

At one point, he stopped abruptly, bending down to pick up another acorn, and before I could react, he flicked it at me again, this time aiming for my shoulder. I slapped it away, shaking my head as if to scold him, but the smile was already breaking through. He just shrugged, his lips quirking up as if to say, "What are you going to do about it?"

I pulled a face, trying to suppress my laughter. He stepped closer, his face inches from mine, and for a heartbeat, everything else disappeared. The quiet woods, the constant fear, all of it melted away. I could almost feel his breath on my skin, even though I knew he wouldn't dare make a sound.

He leaned in, his forehead almost touching mine, and nudged my nose with his. He then kept walking.

I hope they can't hear my heartbeat right now.

I glanced at him one more time, our eyes meeting, and mouthed, "Just wait. I'll get you back." He nodded, smirking in that way that always made my heart skip, as if to say, "I'm counting on it."

C/N nudged me with his shoulder, his hand brushing mine for just a second before he pulled back to catch my attention. I turned to look at him, watching as his hands moved quickly, fingers forming words in the air.
