I had always been the bright spot in my circle of friends, the one who could find a silver lining in any cloud. And then there was C/N. He was the embodiment of grumpy—his frown almost seemed permanent, and his sarcasm was unmatched. We had crossed paths more times than I could count, mostly because of mutual friends, and every interaction left me wondering why someone could be so perpetually annoyed.

Today was no different. I was arriving at our friend's barbecue, ready to bring some sunshine to the gathering. My friends were already mingling, and I made my way over, carrying a tray of homemade cookies.

Spotting C/N sitting alone on the porch, his arms crossed and his brow furrowed, I couldn't resist. I approached him with my usual cheerful smile. "Hey, C/N! How's it going?"

He looked up from his phone, giving me a half-hearted glance. "Hey. It's... fine."

I took a seat next to him, placing the cookies between us. "I made these for everyone. Want to try one?"

He eyed the cookies with mild suspicion but took one anyway. As he bit into it, his expression shifted from skepticism to surprise. "These are actually pretty good."

I grinned. "Wow. The grump can be impressed."

He rolled his eyes, but I noticed the corners of his mouth twitching up slightly. "Yeah, well, don't get used to it."

I laughed softly, taking a cookie for myself. "So, what's got you in a mood today? The world isn't that bad, you know."

He sighed, looking out at the party with a disinterested gaze. "It's not the world. It's just... a lot of people."

"Ah, the classic 'too many people' complaint," I teased, nudging him gently. "You know, you don't have to be so grumpy all the time. It's exhausting just watching you."

He shot me a side-eye. "And you're exhausting with all your cheerfulness. It's like you're on a permanent sugar high."

I sat down beside him on the porch, the hum of the barbecue buzzing in the background. "You know, you're kind of like Luke from Gilmore Girls," I said, leaning back casually.

He gave me a side glance, raising an eyebrow. "The diner dude?"

"Yeah," I continued, smirking. "You've got that whole grumpy, 'I hate people but deep down I care' vibe going on."

He scoffed, though there was a hint of amusement in his voice. "I can't rock a flannel."

"No," I agreed, eyes glinting with mischief, "but you've got the whole brooding thing down. Plus, the scowl? Total Luke energy."

He looked at me with mock exasperation. "I'm not scowling."

"Really?" I nudged him with my shoulder. "Because I'm starting to think it's just your resting face."

For a second, he didn't respond, then he shook his head, a small smirk tugging at his lips. "You're something else, you know that?"

I laughed, a bright and genuine sound. "Maybe. But at least I keeps things interesting." He rolls his eyes. "I've heard that a smile can be contagious." I sing, poking his arm.

"Yeah, well, I haven't caught it yet," he muttered, though his tone was softer than before.

I wasn't about to let his grumpy attitude win so easily. If anyone could crack a smile from C/N, it was going to be me.

"Challenge accepted," I said with a playful grin.

His eyebrows shot up slightly, curious but still guarded. "What are you talking about?"

I leaned in closer, conspiratorially, my voice just above a whisper. "I'm going to make you smile. Just once. That's all I need."

He scoffed, crossing his arms again, though I could see the tiniest spark of interest in his eyes. "Good luck with that."

I stood up, pretending to stretch, then grabbed one of the leftover balloons from the party table. I bite a hole in the top of it and suck in the helium. Let's just say I end up almost passing out trying to do my best Porky Pig impression.

A few people around us chuckled, but my focus was on C/N. He just stared at me, clearly unimpressed.

"Nothing?" I asked, still a little squeaky. "Not even a little crack of a smile?"

He shook his head, a tiny smirk just barely tugging at his lips. "You sound ridiculous."

"Ridiculously fun," I corrected.

He shook his head again, trying to keep that serious expression, but I could tell he was fighting back a grin. His lips twitched, betraying him just a little, and I knew I was close.

I decided to go for it. "You know, if you smiled more, you'd be way cuter."

Finally, I saw it—the tiniest crack in his grumpy armor. His lips curved, just for a second, before he quickly wiped it away. "Okay, fine. That was mildly amusing."

I gasped dramatically, putting my hand over my chest. "I think I did it. I made the stone-faced C/N smile. This is going down in history."

He rolled his eyes, but the playfulness in them hadn't completely faded. "Don't get too cocky. It was more like a smirk."

"I'll take what I can get," I said, beaming at him. Pulling out my phone, I scrolled through until I found the collection of the funniest memes I'd saved. "Alright, tell me this doesn't make you smile," I said, showing him a meme of a dog dressed as a human, complete with a tiny suit and tie.

He stared at it for a long moment before giving me a deadpan look. "I think my soul just died a little."

I burst out laughing, nudging him in the arm. "You're impossible!"

He shrugged. "Told you."

I huffed dramatically. "You're seriously the toughest nut to crack, you know that?"

He finally looked at me, the smallest hint of amusement in his eyes. "Maybe I just like watching you try."

That little glimmer in his gaze gave me hope. I leaned in closer, my voice dropping to a playful whisper. "Oh, so you're entertained now, huh? Does that mean I'm winning?"

For the first time, he actually cracked a smile. It was small, almost imperceptible, but it was there. "Maybe," he said softly.

I gasped theatrically, pointing at his face. "There! I saw it! A smile! I win!"

He chuckled, shaking his head. "Yeah, yeah, you win. Don't let it go to your head."

But I couldn't help it. I felt triumphant as I leaned back beside him, a satisfied smile on my face. "Told you smiles are contagious."

"Maybe for you," he muttered, though there was a softness to his voice now.

I grinned at him, feeling a warmth settle in my chest. "See? It's not so bad to smile once in a while. You might even like it."

He leaned back, a small smirk playing on his lips as he looked at me. "You're a pain, you know that?"

I grinned, leaning in just a bit closer. "Oh come on. Admit it, I'm the Lorelai to your Luke."

He raised an eyebrow, his smirk deepening. "Maybe you're right."

I quirk a brow at him. "About which part?"

He met my eyes, his expression softening. "About liking having you around."

I smiled, feeling a warmth spread through me. "Good. Because I'm not going anywhere."
