The sounds of sneakers squeaking on the gym floor and the rhythmic bounce of the basketball echoed through the gym as my team hustled for the win. We were away today, playing in a rival school's gym, and the stakes felt high. As captain, I was supposed to keep my focus on the game, lead my team, and strategize—but something, or rather someone, was making it very hard to concentrate.

I caught a glimpse of her when we first walked in—a girl with a radiant smile, standing near the front of the bleachers, dressed in the home team's colors. I tried not to stare, but she was... well, she was really cute. Her dark hair framed her face perfectly, and when she laughed, it lit up the entire gym.

I quickly turned my attention back to the game, reminding myself that I had a job to do. But it was impossible not to notice her every time we took a break. She was cheering for the other team, but I found myself sneaking glances her way. My teammates were too focused to notice, and I wasn't about to say anything. I was way too shy for that.

Still, I couldn't help but think about her throughout the game. Her energy was infectious, and every time I glanced in her direction, she was either cheering or laughing with her friends. I found myself wondering if she noticed me. Probably not.

But that didn't stop me from stealing glances.

By the time the game ended, we'd barely won. My teammates were all celebrating, but my mind was still elsewhere. I packed my bag slowly, trying to shake off the strange feeling that had followed me through the game. She had been cheering for the other team, but part of me couldn't help but hope she'd noticed me, even if just for a second.

As I was about to head toward the locker room, a voice interrupted my thoughts.

"Hey, captain!"

I froze mid-step. It was her.

I turned slowly, my heart pounding in my chest, and there she was—standing right in front of me, with that same bright smile. My mind blanked for a second as I tried to figure out why she was talking to me.

"You guys played really well," she said, her voice light and cheerful.

"Congrats on the win."

"Uh-uhh, yea thanks," I stammered, trying to keep my cool. But of course, I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks. This wasn't happening. Why was she talking to me?

She tilted her head, clearly amused by my flustered state.

"You're shy, huh?"

"N-no, not really," I stuttered, though it was obvious I wasn't fooling anyone.

She giggled, and it was the cutest sound I'd ever heard. "You didn't talk to me right after the game. I thought you didn't notice me."

"I-I did," I blurted out before I could stop myself, immediately regretting it as soon as the words left my mouth. "I mean... I noticed you cheering. For the other team."

Her eyes sparkled with amusement, and she gave me a playful smile.

"I noticed you too, you know. You looked pretty serious out there."

I swallowed hard, trying to calm my racing heart.

"I-I was just focused on the game."

She stepped a little closer, her voice lowering just a bit.

"Well, you were cute. All serious and focused."

I blinked, completely caught off guard.

Did she just call me cute?

Before I could respond, she held out her phone.

"So, Captain, want my number?"

My brain short-circuited. This girl—this incredibly cute girl—was asking for my number? I stood there, blinking at her phone like an idiot until she laughed again, nudging me lightly with her elbow.

"Come on, don't be shy," she teased, her smile never fading.

"It's just a number."

I fumbled for my phone, my hands shaking slightly as I quickly entered her number. I still couldn't believe this was happening. I had spent the entire game stealing glances at her, thinking I'd never have the nerve to talk to her, and now here she was, giving me her number like it was the most natural thing in the world.

After we exchanged numbers, she glanced down at her phone, typing something quickly before looking back up at me with a grin.

"There. Now you have no excuse not to text me."

I nodded dumbly, still processing everything.

"Y-yeah, I'll text you."

"Good," she said with a satisfied nod.

"I'll be waiting."

She gave me a small wave before turning and walking away, her ponytail swaying behind her. I watched her go, still in disbelief, until my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out to see a new message.

Zoa: Don't be too shy, okay? ;)

I smiled, my heart still racing. I couldn't believe it. Zoa—the girl I thought I'd only admire from afar—had just given me her number. Maybe being shy wasn't so bad after all.

Later that night, as I lay in bed, I found myself staring at the screen of my phone, her message still open. My thumb hovered over the keyboard, debating what to say. But before I could overthink it, I typed out a simple message and hit send.

Me: Hey, it's the shy captain.

Her response came almost immediately.

Zoa: I knew you'd text. Took you long enough, though ;)
