Sometimes you felt like you were stuck at a yellow light with her.

It is not quite a green light to go all in, but neither is a red one telling you to stop.

Just there — suspended, lingering, heart hesitating at the intersection between hope and fear.

Just like tonight.

There she was again.

Leaning over your desk, her smile playful, her perfume — a faint cherry blossom scent — wrapping around you in invisible ribbons.

"Y/N," she sang, drawing out your name as if it were a secret melody only you could hear, "are you free after practice?"

You blinked up at her, heart already stumbling over itself.

Was she asking you out? Was this it?

"I... guess?" you stammered, scratching the back of your neck.

Eunchae grinned, that mischievous sparkle lighting up her brown eyes.

"Good. Let's go get ice cream, okay?"

Before you could answer, she was already skipping away, her laughter trailing behind her like sunlight through cracks.

You stared after her, stunned.

And in the corner of your eye, you caught a few classmates exchanging glances — some amused, some almost pitying.

Because they knew.

Everyone knew.

This wasn't the first time.

*****

The morning drifted by in a haze.

Each class, each lecture, passed without you truly being there, your mind tangled up in the quiet storm she left behind.

Every little interaction felt heavier.

The way Eunchae turned to pass you a pen when yours ran out.

The way her fingers brushed yours — just a little longer than necessary.

The way her laughter seemed louder, brighter whenever you were near.

And yet, in the same breath, she twirled around the classroom laughing with someone else, slung her arm casually around another classmate's shoulders, her world spinning without you at the centre.

The uncertainty gnawed at you like cold fingers at the back of your neck.

You weren't sure if you were reading into everything too much.

Or if maybe — just maybe — she was caught in the same yellow light you were.

When school ended, she was already by the door, cheeks pink from the winter air, bouncing lightly on her toes.

"Y/N!" she called out, voice warm and clear, cutting through the chilly air.

"Don't forget! Ice cream after practice!"

You nodded, heart hammering.

Practice was a blur.

You moved on autopilot, the drills and commands washing over you, your focus stolen away by memories of her smile.

*****

Evening fell quickly, shadows stretching long and thin across the sidewalk.

You ended up at a small park, the both of you sitting side-by-side on a worn bench, ice cream melting slightly in the cold.

The laughter came easily at first — silly jokes, half-forgotten memories — until it faded into a quiet, vulnerable silence.

You snuck a glance at her.

Eunchae was staring at her ice cream cup, her hands tucked into the sleeves of her hoodie.

"Y/N," she said suddenly, her voice soft, "you're really special to me."

Your heart clenched painfully in your chest.

You wanted to believe her —

God, you wanted to —

But the games, the teasing, the endless mixed signals... they left you adrift.

"I don't get it," you said before you could stop yourself.

"What do you want from me, Eunchae?"

She blinked, surprised by your sudden honesty.

"I..." she hesitated, biting her lower lip.

"I didn't mean to confuse you."

"Then why?" you pressed, your voice cracking a little.

"Why do you act like you like me, then pull away like nothing happened?"

The cold settled in deeper, but you didn't care.

Eunchae dropped her gaze.

"I'm scared," she whispered.

"Scared of ruining everything."

You stared at her.

"I like you," she said finally, voice trembling. "I like you so much that it terrifies me. You're... safe. You're always safe for me. And I didn't know how to tell you without losing you."

You exhaled slowly, your breath fogging the air between you.

Safe.

That word again.

Just like the yellow light.

Hesitating. Waiting. Hoping for permission to cross the line.

You reached out first, your gloved hand brushing hers.

And for the first time, she didn't flinch away.

She leaned into you instead — small, shy, vulnerable.

The world went still.

Carefully, you closed the distance between you, tilting your head slightly.

And then, softly, your lips met.

The kiss was clumsy. Messy.

But it was real — raw and trembling like the first step after being stuck too long at a yellow light.

It tasted of mint chocolate, winter air, and all the words you hadn't dared to say.

When you finally pulled away, the world came rushing back in a thousand dazzling colours.

Eunchae's cheeks were burning pink, her breath shallow.

She laughed quietly — a shaky, beautiful sound — and tucked her hair behind her ear.

You didn't speak.

There was no need to.

You walked her home afterwards, your steps slow, your shoulders brushing occasionally.

When you finally reached her street, she hesitated under the lamplight, looking up at you.

"I'll text you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

You smiled and nodded, watching her retreat into the shadows.

Not even a minute after you turned the corner, your phone buzzed.

A single message.

"Safe?"

You smiled, feeling your heart bloom painfully wide inside your chest.

Your thumb hovered briefly before you replied:

"Always."

And just like that, after what felt like forever, the yellow light started turning green.
