A deafening silence enveloped the living room of the Rivera's mansion, Maki and Aphrodite sat still on the couch, finding the tranquility of the moment exhilarating as they wait for their father to say something, to finally break the thick quietness masking the four walled room. The youngest of the siblings, kept her head down while she fidget her fingers. Anticipation overwhelming her whole being.
The terror that Maki went through last night had gone by like a storm passing over, or at the very least that's what she think. Her father hadn't thrown any questions at her last night after he found out that she was pregnant, instead he let her to have a rest for the night. With a thought in mind that maybe her father won't make this ruckus a big deal, she slept the night through unbeknownst to her knowledge that a big storm was just brewing in the corner.
“Paano ka nabuntis, Maki? Ni wala ka pa ngang pinapakilala sa akin. Sino ba 'yang gago na iyan at hindi man lang alam ang salitang ‘modesty’? Binuntis ka muna bago pakasalan.” with a sharp and stern tone, Harold uttered.
“Actually, Papa—” Maki instantly snapped her head towards her older sister before pulling her back down when the latter stood up, completely cutting her sister's sentence off.
Aphrodite turn her head to look at her sister with a questioning look, she saw the pleading look and the subtle shake of Maki's head. As if saying that, ‘No, don't say it’. But Harold was quick to catch on, with a stern look he glance at them.
“What is it? May iba pa ba akong dapat na malaman?” He asked sharply.
“Aphrodite. Speak, now.” the sternness is audible on Harold's tone, when he realized that no one was planning to answer him, making the two sisters to jerked up a little.
Aphrodite swallow the lump on her throat, feeling the rage radiating from their father who was giving them intense stares.
“Maki's married.” Aphrodite felt like her tongue was moving faster than her brain, now she didn't know if her father understand what she had just blurted out.
“What?” hindi makapaniwalang sambit ni Harold sa dalawa at ipinukol ang kaniyang tingin sa pinakabata niyang anak, na siya namang kaagad nag-iwas ng tingin.
“Kanino?” mariing saad nito.
“Cielo Madrigal.” Aphrodite saw how his father's features softened a little upon the mention of the name before scrunching his face again in disapproval. So she decided to continue.
“She has this special condition—”
“I know about that. Is the baby, hers?” Harold asked, cutting Aphrodite's sentence off.
Tumango ang dalaga bilang sagot habang umiling naman si Maki.
“No.” kaagad na bumaling ang atensyon ni Aphrodite sa kaniyang kapatid, at kumunot ang kaniyang noo.
“What are you talking about?” Aphrodite averted her eyes to their father and shook her head.
“It is Cielo's–”
“Aphie!” pa-impit na sigaw ni Maki, bilang pagpuputol sa pagsasalita ng dalaga.
“What? Kay Cielo naman talaga 'yan.”
“Hindi ko maintindihan. Kung siya ang other parent, bakit wala siya rito para alagaan ka? At bakit tila iginigiit mong sakanya ang bata?” napatungo na lang ulit si Maki sa sinabi ng Ama.
