I stood not ten feet from Vincent as snow fell down and landed on his unruly hair and long eyelashes. It's not fair! Why does he look like a model while I probably looked the opposite?Damn him and his good looks.
"How are the twins?" His question took me completely off guard.
The only way I knew how to defend myself was to be cruel. If it was being cruel to my mate then so be it.
"So now you have time for your children," I spat. He took a step back as if I slapped him.
His eyes darkened murderously. "Follow me."
I growl. "No, you follow me. I know the perfect place to talk."
I ran right past him, once reaching the woods I shifted into my wolf and followed a path I've known since childhood. The snow covering the trail didn't faze me one bit. I knew this land like the back of my hand.
The path led us to a mountain Big Bear Mountain to be exact. Humans rarely hiked on this specific mountain for the known giant monsters lurking around every corner.
We stayed on the same path until it finally led us to the cliff; where Helen willingly sacrificed herself for me when it was my fifth birthday.
I didn't acknowledge his presence but instead looked out at the snowy landscape. The fresh air going in and out of my lungs was a refresher. Closing my eyes, I slowly breathe in and changed back to my human self. Naked.
Wordlessly a shirt was tossed and I catch it and reluctantly put it on. When I gathered enough courage I faced my mate ready to tell him everything I felt but took a step back. He was standing right in front of me.
I clear my throat loudly. "Um, hi."
"You ran away with my children and that's all you can say?" he said slowly.
Anger flared like a untamed fire. "What did you expect me to do? Did you expect me to allow you or that bitch anywhere near me or my little hybrids when you. . . ." Voice trailing off.
Taking a step closer so that our bodies brushed. "When I what?"
"When you betrayed me!" I yelled, tears of anger and hurt sliding down the side of my cheek. "When you betrayed us."
His arms tried to close around me but I shook my head back and forth, back and forth, taking a step away.
"I know you felt the pain you put me through, but the pain I felt was nothing close to what you felt. You broke my heart and hurt our bond. I don't think we can be together anymore," I whispered painfully. I turned around and started walking away but I didn't take even two steps before iron-like arms wrapped around me.
Vincent pressed me against a tree, holding my hands firmly in one of his, and my body caged by his.
"I have an explanation," he said shortly. Not looking at him. "Please, don't shut me out."
Vincent pressed his forehead on mine with closed eyes like the very idea hurt him.
"Why would I allow you in when you're just going to end up crushing me?" I whispered tiredly.
"Because I had to taste her blood before I knew for sure."
That got my attention. "What did you have to be sure about? Looked like you were pretty comfortable with her from where I was standing."
He lifted his head and licked his lips and my traitorous eyes followed that one movement.
Sighing, "The reason I gave her that look" - shaking his head when I opened my mouth to say something snappy - "was because she smelt different."
