chapter 38

The first rays of sunlight streamed into the room through the curtains, casting a soft, golden hue over everything.  Taehyung's eyes slowly opened, blinking against the brightness as he adjusted to waking up.  His senses were immediately assaulted by the feeling of a body lying next to him, warm and soft, pressing against his side. He blinked again, the memories of the previous night slowly coming back to him.

He looked down and saw her there, her face peaceful in sleep, her hair fanned out against the pillow. 
The memory of the night before, the way she had asked him to sleep with her, came back to him in a rush. 
He was suddenly very aware of the intimate nature of their current position. Her leg was draped over his, her arm flung across his abdomen, her head resting on his shoulder.

His heartrate spiked as he registered how close she was, how intimate it all felt. He couldn't deny the physical effect she was having on him, the way his body was reacting to her nearness, to the feel of her skin on his. He took a deep breath, trying to control his physiological response to her, to push aside the primal instincts that threatened to take over.

She stirred next to him, slowly coming to consciousness. Her eyes opened slowly, blinking against the morning light.  For a moment, she remained still, disoriented by the unfamiliar surroundings. Then, as if suddenly remembering where she was, she looked up at him. Her eyes widened slightly, surprise and confusion mingling in her expression as she realized where she was and how close they were.She quickly pulled away from him, her cheeks flushing a soft pink as she sat up in the bed. 

Iris: I - I'm sorry.(she mumbled, hastily trying to fix her tangled hair)I didn't mean to.. I mean, I-

The memory of her words from the previous night came flooding back to her, adding to the embarrassment. 
She avoided his gaze, her hands fidgeting nervously with the sheets.
Taehyung sat up as well, watching her with a mix of tenderness and concern. He could see the embarrassment in her face, could feel the flustered energy swirling between them. 

Taehyung: It's okay, You don't need to apologize.

He wanted to reach out, to take her hand, to offer some sort of comfort. But he resisted, the memory of the night before still too fresh, his own feelings too complex and chaotic. 
There was a moment of awkward silence as both of them tried to process the situation, neither knowing quite what to say or do.

Taehyung: How..how did you sleep?

he finally asked, trying to break the tense quiet that had fallen over the room.She looked up at him, her eyes meeting his for a moment before darting away. 

Iris: Uh...good. I slept good.

There was a pause, an unspoken question hanging in the air. She glanced up at him again, her expression a mix of uncertainty and vulnerability. Taehyung saw the look in her eyes, the unspoken question she was too nervous to voice. 
But he had his own tumultuous emotions to deal with. The proximity, the intimacy of the morning had left him feeling on edge, his desires too raw, too hard to control. So he did the only thing he could think of, the only thing he knew would give her some much-needed distance. 

Taehyung: I'm going to get some air.

He disentangled himself from the covers, ignoring the twinge of regret he felt as he pulled away from her. He swung his legs over the side of the bed, standing up briskly. He spared one last glance at her, her gaze still on him, the question still hanging in the air.  Then he forced himself to turn and walk out of the room, closing the door softly behind him.

Iris sat there in the bed, her mind replaying the events of the previous night. She cringed as she remembered her request, her exhaustion and emotions making her act in ways she never would have expected.
