To return
Where my heart belongs
As my soul cries out
I have searched for a resting place
In the hearts of the mortals
I have roamed the earth
Relentlessly pursuing joy
I have found it not,
So I look to you
Exhausted and tired that You
May open Your heavenly gate.

I long to dwell where You built
Your home,
To be among those You count
As Your people,
I will not lie I sin in speech,
I sin in thought,
In action as well.

But I stretch out my hand to
Your city's gates
Hoping to grasp them
To feel their welcome,
I long to enter and hear You call
My name,
So I can be counted among the many
In spite of my foolishness.

I have walked the mile
In search of a friend,
I have found no comfort
In the love of the worldly,
All humans are alike,
They carry burdens,
Without perfection in their veins
They have no love to offer.

So I return to Your gates
In prayer they will open,
I return to Your heart in faith
It remains constant,
For after a long run
My truest wish is to rest,
Under Your wings is where
I always find comfort,
Your hand that creates
Is what cradles me to sleep,
Your eyes which see all
Give me peace of mind
As I know You watch over me

Do You hear me?
I am standing outside Your city
Crying out Your name,
It is I, Your faithless child
Broken and bitter,
Purposeless in confusion,
Beat up and scarred,
Begging for entrance,
Longing for audience,
Pleading for my life,
So I can come back home,
Dwelling forever among You and Yours,
In the City Of God
