Shakthi and Mithra sat on the nearly empty bus, both of them half-drenched from the rain. The sound of raindrops tapping against the windows filled the quiet space as they settled into their seats. Shakthi had insisted on taking the bus, wanting to experience something different, and Mithra had gone along with it, amused by his curiosity.
As they rode home, they were on a call with Avi, chatting and laughing, their clothes still wet from the downpour. The bus was quiet, save for their conversation and the steady hum of the engine.
Wait, wait, nee oruthavanga veetula thangirkiya?
( wait , wait, you're staying at someone's house?)
Naana yenga thangunen, thanga vechitanga
( They made me stay)
Avi answered his sister via the phone call. However, she still seemed unconvinced.
Unna pathi enaku theriyum, unaku venana nee yepdhiyachum vandhurupae
( I know very well about you, if you didn't want it, you would have done everything to get out of there)
Mithra said, to which Avi glared at his mobile. He pressed it back to his ear and said,
Avan vandhadhu lerndhu avane maariye pesa arambichitae nee. Yenna pakathula dhane irukan avan?
( You've started talking like him nowadays, he's sitting beside you isn't he?)
Mithra turned to Shakthi, who waved his hands, asking her to say no,
Paakathula illanu solla solrana?
( Is he asking you to say no?)
Mithra couldn't help but laugh as Shakthi snatched the phone from her hand,
Bro! Neenga enna pathi pesava nanga ivlo kashtha padhrom?
( Bro! We are not struggling this much for you to talk about me?)
Ehn?
Illa ivlo kashtha paatu kekuromnu sonnen.
( I meant that, we're struggling to ask about the situation there)
Shakthi gulped as he heard Avi hum. They talked for a while before they were going to hang up. Avi told Mithra,
Oru naal neeyum inga varanum Mithra. Namba irukura madhiri periya edham illa dhan, ana manasara romba vasadhiyana veedhu, neranja sapadhu, nalla iruku
( You should come here to one day. This place isn't as big as ours, but by warmth, it is. Homely food. It's nice.)
Mithra was more than surprised to hear Avi express himself like that. She had always thought that getting Avi to show his emotions was as rare as spotting a meteorite—virtually impossible. But in that moment, she realized she had been wrong. After all, he was human too, and he just needed the right space to be open. With Shakthi's help, she'd managed to create that space, allowing her to see a side of Avi she had never imagined existed.
Andha trip'la enakum yedham irukuma bro?
( Is there any place for me in this trip?)
Shakthi dramatically asked,
