Mithra was at the wheel, focused on the road ahead, but her mind kept wandering. The silence between her and Shakthi was a strange one—too quiet to be comfortable, too charged to be casual. He was seated beside her, looking outside at the sunset.
Exact'ah yenga porom?
(Where are we going exactly?)
she asked, her voice light.
Yedhavadhu hotel'la check in panlama?
(Should we check into a hotel or something first?)
Shakthi looked up, grinning,
Panlame
(We could)
he said, then paused before adding,
Ana adhuku munnadhi na oru yedathuku poganum, do you mind?
(But I need to go somewhere first. Do you mind?)
Not at all
she replied, masking her curiosity with a polite smile.
Yenga?
(Where to?)
He worked on setting the gps as he replied casually,
Anjali'ya paakanum
(I have to meet Anjali)
Mithra turned her head sharply, taken by surprise. Her heart sank just a little, though she kept her face neutral. He glanced at her with raised brows, and she quickly smiled and shook her head as if to say, It’s fine, really. But inside, it didn’t feel fine.
She watched him set the GPS and followed the route in silence, gripping the steering wheel a little tighter than necessary. The drive was smooth, the city slowly giving way to quieter streets. Eventually, they pulled up at an apartment building.
Shakthi unbuckled his seatbelt and reached for the door.
I’ll be quick
he said.
I’ll wait here
Mithra said, keeping her tone breezy. He shrugged and disappeared into the building, taking the lift up.
Upstairs, 601 frowned when the doorbell rang. She wasn’t expecting anyone. Opening the door cautiously, she was met with 403 grinning like an idiot, waving at her like they were best friends.
What the—?! What are you doing here?
He brushed past her and walked into the house like it was his.
Hi to you too
he said, plopping himself on the couch.
601 narrowed her eyes crossing her hands over her chest as she glared at him.
He raised his hands in mock surrender.
Seri, seri. Sorry kekka dhan vandhen
(Okay, okay. I came to apologize.)
Yedhuku?
(For what?)
Ennala dhane unakum Ananya kum sandha, adhuku dhan. I'm sorry.
(For causing that fight between you and Ananya. I’m sorry.)
She let out a sigh and simply nodded.
