Morning light seeped into the room, unwelcome and persistent. Ananya clicked her tongue, irritated by the intrusion. Rubbing her eyes, she grumbled and decided to draw the curtains shut so she could continue sleeping in peace.
Her eyes were still half-closed, unwilling to fully wake up, as she swung her legs over the edge of the bed. But when her feet reached down, they didn’t touch the ground.
Ahhhhhhh!
A loud shriek shattered the morning quiet, jolting Ananya fully awake.
Avi rubbed his bicep, a pained expression on his face as he sat up. He winced, glaring at Ananya, who was now sitting with her knees pulled to her chest, staring at him like he was some ghost that had materialized out of nowhere.
Neenga yepdi inga?!
( What are you doing here?!)
she demanded, her voice shaking in confusion and mild horror.
Avi deadpanned, muttering,
Ehn, thala eluthu.
( Ehn, my fate)
Annoyed, Ananya clicked her tongue in frustration and grabbed a pillow, throwing it at him. Avi caught it effortlessly, smirking as she whined,
Velayadama sollunga!
( Quit it!)
Excuse me, madam,
he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
Nethu Shakthi kuda panna settai yedhume nyabagam illaya?
( Don't you remember everything you did with Shakthi yesterday?)
Ananya frowned, trying to piece together the events of the previous night. As fragments of her memory from the bar surfaced, her eyes widened to the point it looked like they might pop out. Avi bit his lip, suppressing a smile as he folded his arms and sat cross-legged, thoroughly enjoying her mortified expression.
Ananya facepalmed herself and groaned,
Avan sonnapove na yosichirukanum. Che!
( I should have been careful with him. Che!)
Yenna?
( What?)
Avi prompted, raising an eyebrow.
She sighed and explained,
Pudusa cocktail'nu yedhedhayo kalandhan. Appove na no sollirukanum.
(He mixed up something new and called it a cocktail. I should’ve said no right then and there.)
Apdiya, madam?
( Is it so, madam?)
Avi’s sarcasm was sharp but Ananya hadn't noticed it yet as she continued explaining,
Ama, Avanuke na dha kudika sollitandhen. Avan enake mix panumbodhu na—
("Yes, I was the one who taught him to drink. When he was mixing it for me, I—")
She stopped abruptly when she noticed Avi staring at her with a poker-faced expression. Realizing she’d just admitted to something incredibly dumb, she flashed an awkward grin before diving into the bed and burying her face under the covers.
