Mithra impatiently paced by the staircase, her nerves on edge as she waited for Shakthi to come downstairs. The previous night's confession weighed heavily on her, and now, in the clear light of morning, the relief of getting it off her chest had vanished. Instead, it was replaced by a growing sense of dread. How would he react? What would he say? She had spent the whole night tossing and turning, her mind plagued by worries about facing him again.
Yenna ma? Yen oru madhiri irukae?
( What happened dear? Why do you seem odd?)
Rajendran asked Mithra as he noticed her being unusually jumpy, she mustered upon a smile and answered,
Onnu illa pa, I have a test today adhan. Neenga doctor pathingale, yenna sonnanga?
( Nothing pa, I have a test today that's why. You went to the doctor, what did they say?)
Adhu onnu illa, just stress avlodha
( Nothing, it was just stress it seems)
Stress'ah? Ungaluku yenna pa stress?
( Stress? What stress could you have dad?)
Rajendran chuckled softly, shaking his head at the little fib he had told his daughter. He knew how much Mithra constantly worried about the people around her, always carrying the weight of their troubles on her young shoulders. That's why he kept the truth from her-what he had felt the other day had been a symptom of a heart attack. But he couldn't bear to burden her with that knowledge. She was still so young, and he didn't want to add to the guilt she already carried. Better to keep it hidden for now, he thought.
Mithra shook her head in return, a small smile tugging at her lips as they continued their breakfast. But then, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Shakthi descending the stairs. Her smile faded, replaced with a frown as she saw him dressed in his office attire. Something was off.
Shakthi hesitated as he approached the dining table, his steps slower than usual, and Mithra's frown deepened when she realized he was deliberately avoiding her gaze. The tension between them hung heavy in the air.
Uncle na office poitu vaaren
( Uncle, I'll leave for work)
Breakfast saaptu po pa
( Have your breakfast son)
Illa uncle, konjam important work iruku, ippove ponnum. Na anga poi saptukuren.
( No uncle, I have some important work, I have to leave now. I'll have something at the cafeteria)
Na venumna saapadhu kondu varava?
( Should I bring you lunch later?)
Illa venam
( No)
Mithra was taken aback by how quickly Shakthi responded, the words leaving his lips almost too fast. His eyes darted away as soon as he saw the hurt on her face, and he pressed his lips into a thin, forced smile before excusing himself with a brief farewell.
Yet, as he walked away, something gnawed at him. The look of pain in Mithra's eyes lingered in his mind, causing an unexpected pang in his heart. He couldn't understand why it affected him so much, but there was no denying that it did.
