Wednesday's POV
Who could this be? Why can't we just live in peace? I won’t let him hurt my Cara Mia...
These thoughts circle endlessly in my mind as I stand alone on the balcony in the stillness of the night. The weight of everything presses down on me, and the chill in the air feels like nothing compared to the icy dread sitting in my chest. Both Enid and Yoko are asleep, exhausted from our day together with Divina. I should be resting too, but how can I when danger feels so close?
"Wednesday? Why are you out here again?" Yoko’s voice cuts through the silence, rough from sleep.
I don’t even bother to look at her. "Just thinking," I say, my voice flat as ever, masking the storm inside me.
"It’s about the text you got earlier, isn’t it?" Yoko presses. She sounds concerned, but I keep my face unreadable, unwilling to let her know how much it’s affecting me.
"You don’t need to stay here with us, Yoko. Maybe Divina needs you more." I try to deflect, but she isn’t buying it.
"Nice try, but no. You two need me right now. I’ll make it up to her later." Yoko's tone is firm. "Now answer me. What’s going on?"
With a sigh, I finally pull out my phone and hand it to her, the message glowing on the screen. Her eyes widen as she reads it, the same chill running down her spine that I felt earlier.
"Another idiot trying to ruin our lives." I say, trying to sound indifferent, but even I can hear the edge in my voice.
"Wednesday..." Yoko hesitates, and I can see the conflict in her eyes. "I’m not sure if I should tell you this, but... Enid can transform, even if there’s poison in her system. But it’s risky-"
"Tell me." My voice is low, but I feel the desperation slipping through. "I need to keep her safe."
Yoko sighs, clearly reluctant, but she continues. "You’ll have to give her every ounce of her bead from the container together with the bead that is in you. It’ll let her wolf out long enough to fight, but..." She pauses, her eyes dropping to the ground. "If you’re still not fully healed from what happened when you first met Enid, you might not make it."
I feel my heart constrict at her words, but I don’t flinch. Yoko’s trying to protect us, but there’s no choice here. I’d die a thousand times before I let anything happen to Enid.
"And there’s this." Yoko pulls a black wooden dagger from her coat and hands it to me. "It’ll kill a human or a vampire. Just in case. I had it with me since I went to our old library in my house"
I take the dagger, feeling the cool weight of it in my hand. "Thank you." I mutter, my voice colder than I intend. "I’ll take the risk. I always will."
For her, I’d do anything.
"Maybe it’s best if I’m the one captured first." I say it without hesitation. Better me than my Enid...
"Wait? What?" Yoko's whisper grew louder, the shock evident in her voice.
"Keep it down." I hissed, narrowing my eyes at her. "You're going to wake Enid."
Yoko blinked, her pale face a mixture of disbelief and frustration. "You seriously think letting them capture you is the answer? Are you out of your mind?"
I remained calm, my gaze never wavering. "It’s the only way to ensure Enid’s safety. If I’m the target, then I need to be the one they focus on. I won’t let them get to her."
Yoko’s hands clenched into fists, her frustration clear. "Wednesday, I get that you're doing this out of love, but this- this is suicide!"
"I’m not asking for your approval, Yoko." I said, my voice steady and cold. "I’m telling you what’s going to happen. You don’t need to like it. You just need to trust that I know what I’m doing."
