Chapter 19: Lines in the Sand

The days after Yashika’s entry into Samar Shehrawat’s inner financial circle were fraught with tension. Each move she made within the Sherawat Group was a calculated risk, a high-stakes game of deception. The thrill of getting closer to exposing Samar’s dark secrets mingled with the ever-present danger of being discovered. But Yashika couldn’t afford to falter now. Too much depended on her success.

She sat at her desk in the corporate office, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she searched through encrypted files. Every now and then, her eyes flicked to the door, half expecting Samar to walk in and uncover her betrayal. But the office remained still, the only sound the steady hum of the air conditioner and the clicking of her keys.

Her phone buzzed. It was a message from Adrith.

Adrith: "Any progress?"

Yashika’s fingers hesitated above the keys before she typed her response.

Yashika: "I’m getting close. I think I’ve found one of the offshore accounts, but it’s locked behind layers of encryption. I’ll need more time."

His reply came quickly, as if he had been waiting for her response with bated breath.

Adrith: "Don’t push too hard. If he suspects you…"

She smiled faintly at the concern in his words.

Yashika: "I know. I’m being careful."

Her eyes scanned the screen, a sudden flicker catching her attention. There, buried deep in the file she was accessing, was a document labeled only with a date—five years prior. Yashika’s heart raced. It was around the time Adrith’s mother had died under suspicious circumstances. Could this be the lead they were looking for?

Her mind whirled as she quickly opened the document, her heart pounding in her chest. The text on the screen made her blood run cold. It was a series of transactions, large sums of money transferred to untraceable accounts. But what caught her eye was the notation beside one of the entries: "Medical Expenses: R. Shehrawat."

Yashika’s breath hitched. This was it. Proof that Samar had been involved in something far more sinister than they had imagined. She quickly downloaded the document onto an encrypted drive, her pulse racing with a mixture of fear and excitement. They were getting closer, but the danger was growing more real by the second.

That evening, Yashika returned to the mansion, her nerves on edge. She needed to tell Adrith what she had found. As she walked through the grand entrance, she could feel the weight of the Sherawat legacy bearing down on her. It was a house built on lies and blood, and the walls seemed to hum with the tension of the secrets they concealed.

Adrith was waiting for her in the study, pacing restlessly in front of the grand windows that overlooked the estate grounds. He turned the moment she entered, his expression a mixture of worry and anticipation.

“What did you find?” he asked, his voice low.

Yashika handed him the drive, her voice trembling slightly. “It’s all here. The proof. The money transfers, the cover-ups. I found a transaction linked to your mother’s death. Medical expenses for ‘R. Shehrawat.’”

Adrith’s face darkened as he took the drive, his fingers gripping it tightly. He looked as if he had been struck by a physical blow. “So it’s true,” he muttered, his voice raw. “He was behind it all.”

Yashika placed a hand on his arm, trying to offer him some comfort. “We have what we need, Adrith. We can bring him down now.”

But Adrith didn’t look relieved. Instead, his jaw tightened, and a storm brewed behind his eyes. “This is only the beginning,” he said softly, almost to himself. “There’s more. There has to be.”

Yashika’s brow furrowed in confusion. “More? Adrith, this is enough to take him down.”

Adrith shook his head. “No. My mother’s death was just one part of his empire of corruption. I need to destroy it all. Every last piece of it.”

Yashika’s stomach knotted. She could see the anger bubbling beneath the surface, the need for vengeance that had consumed him. “Adrith… don’t let this consume you. We’ve come so far. We can finish this.”

Adrith met her gaze, his eyes filled with a mix of gratitude and torment. “I know. But until he’s stripped of everything, until I see him brought to his knees, I won’t stop.”

Yashika sighed softly. She understood his need for justice, but she worried about what it was doing to him. The deeper they delved into Samar’s dark empire, the more dangerous their mission became—not just for them, but for everyone around them.

---

The following day, Yashika received an unexpected summons to Samar’s private estate. The message had been brief, but the tone unmistakable—Samar wanted to see her.

Her pulse quickened as she arrived at the estate, the sprawling mansion looming before her like a fortress. The air was thick with tension as she walked through the grand foyer, the sound of her footsteps echoing in the vast, empty halls.

Samar was waiting for her in his study, seated behind a large mahogany desk that seemed to dwarf him. His gaze was cold and calculating as he gestured for her to sit.

“I’ve been hearing good things about your work, Yashika,” Samar said, his voice smooth as silk, but there was an edge to it. “You’ve proven yourself to be… invaluable.”

Yashika forced a smile, her heart racing in her chest. “Thank you, Mr. Shehrawat. I’m just doing my job.”

Samar’s lips curled into a thin smile. “Indeed. But there’s more to this world than just doing your job. Loyalty, for instance, is a valuable commodity. And trust—well, trust is earned.”

Yashika swallowed hard, the weight of his words sinking in. He was testing her. Watching her every move, waiting for a misstep. She had to be careful.

“I understand, sir,” she said carefully. “I’m committed to proving my loyalty to the Sherawat Group.”

Samar studied her for a long moment, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Good. Because loyalty is everything in this business, Yashika. One wrong move, and everything can come crashing down.”

Yashika nodded, her hands clenched tightly in her lap to keep from trembling. She couldn’t let him see her fear.

After what felt like an eternity, Samar stood and walked around the desk, stopping just inches from her. He reached out and gently lifted her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze.

“Remember, Yashika,” he said softly, his voice laced with a chilling warning. “I have eyes everywhere. If there’s even a hint of betrayal… you’ll regret it.”

Yashika’s heart thundered in her chest as she nodded, forcing herself to maintain eye contact. “I won’t let you down.”

Samar smiled, though there was no warmth in it. “See that you don’t.”

---

That night, Yashika returned to the mansion, her mind racing with everything that had transpired. Adrith was waiting for her, his expression tense the moment he saw the look on her face.

“What happened?” he asked, his voice filled with concern.

Yashika shook her head, her hands trembling slightly as she recounted the meeting with Samar. “He knows, Adrith. Or at least, he suspects something. I’m not sure how much longer I can keep this up.”

Adrith’s expression darkened, his jaw clenching. “We need to move fast. The longer we wait, the more dangerous this becomes.”

Yashika nodded, her stomach churning with anxiety. “I know. But I’m scared, Adrith. He won’t just let us walk away from this.”

Adrith pulled her into his arms, his voice soft but determined. “I won’t let anything happen to you, Yashika. We’ll finish this together.”

Yashika buried her face in his chest, taking comfort in his embrace. But deep down, she knew that their battle was only just beginning. And the lines between justice and revenge were becoming increasingly blurred.
