Allie’s cellphone rang.

"Hello, Yaya," she answered.

“Allie, your sister is home,” Yaya Margie said.

Allie let out a sigh of relief. “Thank you, Yaya. We’re heading back now, but the rain is really heavy.”

“Oh no, please tell Tatay Leo to be careful while driving. Are you close to home?”

“We're still a bit far; we just came from Maricar's friend's house.”

“Be careful, Allie.”

“I will, Yaya.”

As the car turned onto a side street, a loud clap of thunder suddenly roared, followed by a flash of lightning that struck a nearby power pole. It was too late for Mang Leo to hit the brakes; the pole fell right onto their car.

Allie, who was still talking to Yaya Margie, suddenly fell silent. Her device was crushed, and her head slammed against the car window, knocking her unconscious. Countless shards of glass shattered against her body. Mang Leo, bloodied and unconscious, sat at the wheel.

"YOU have a call. You have a call."

Mr. Ocampo woke up to the sound of his phone’s ringtone. He pressed the answer key, his eyes still closed.

"Hello?"

"Hello, Mr. Ocampo?" A woman's voice.

"Yes?"

"Are you the father of Miss Alessandra Ocampo?"

He opened his eyes and suddenly sat up. "Yes, I am," he replied, a sudden nervousness creeping in.

“Mr. Ocampo, I'm calling from Saint Luke General Hospital. Your family driver was involved in an accident, and your daughter  was with him. If you could—”

“We’ll be there first thing in the morning,” he interrupted, ending the call. He quickly woke his wife.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, concerned.

“Allie had an accident. We need to go home.” He dialed their house number in Manila.

“Hello?” came the response on the other end.

“Yaya, what happened? Why is my daughter in the hospital?”

The housekeeper began to cry. “Sir, Leo took them to pick up Maricar because she ran away. I don’t know what happened.”

Mr. Ocampo was furious. “And where is my daughter?” he demanded.

“She’s upstairs, Sir. She doesn’t know yet what happened to Leo and Allie.”

He hung up the phone.

“How’s Allie?” his wife asked, her voice filled with worry.

“I don’t know yet.”

“What happened?”

“Maricar,” he replied angrily. “She ran away.”

He felt overwhelmed, unsure of how to deal with his headstrong daughter. All he could do was pray that Allie wasn’t seriously hurt. He feared he might never forgive her for this.

---

Maia jolted upright in bed. She quickly threw on a jacket and rushed out of her room. Within seconds, she was standing in front Zenda’s room. Just as she was about to knock, the door swung open.

“Do you have any news?” Zenda asked immediately.

“I know where she is,” Maia replied, a smile breaking on her face.
