Allie’s eyes widened in surprise as she spotted the vehicle parked outside the palace gates. It was sleek, with an otherworldly design, unlike anything she had seen in her world.
“It runs on magic. We don’t use gasoline like in your world,” Maia explained, noticing Allie’s amazed look.
Rollieh, who was to be their driver, stood by the car.
“Amazing,” Allie murmured, impressed. As they settled into the vehicle, she felt a strange sense of comfort sitting next to Maia, while Zen took the back seat. Jhosie and Rollieh sat up front, the vehicle humming softly as it powered up.
“How long is the journey?” Allie asked after a moment, still trying to take in the wonders of this magical world.
“Three hours, Your Highness,” Jhosie replied. She had grown more comfortable around Maia and the others, now speaking freely.
Though Maia still held some reservations about the company of Jhosie and Rollieh due to their past, the importance of their mission had prompted her to put personal matters aside for the moment.
As the vehicle began its journey, Allie gazed out the window, taking in the empty, desolate landscape. The streets were eerily quiet, the buildings seemed abandoned, and aside from the palace, it felt like a ghost town.
“I forgot to ask: Why haven’t the people returned to their homes?” Allie asked, puzzled.
“It’s not safe outside the palace, Your Highness. The magic surrounding it is the only thing keeping the people safe,” Jhosie explained, her voice soft yet filled with the weight of their situation. “We don’t know how long this kingdom will remain like this.”
Allie rolled down the window, wanting to feel the breeze against her skin. The silence outside was almost deafening.
“Allie, no!” Maia exclaimed, her voice sharp as she rushed to close the window again.
“Why?” Allie asked, her voice tinged with confusion. “It’s just a little air.”
“It’s not safe, Allie,” Maia warned, her expression filled with concern. “Dark magic is lingering around the kingdom. That’s why Rainier is in danger. It’s better for us to stay inside and avoid anything that might harm us.”
Allie nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. She continued to look out the window, but this time, she noticed something unsettling. Dark clouds had begun to form seemingly out of nowhere.
“Maybe that’s the dark magic they were talking about,” she thought, her stomach turning with unease.
“Can you see them?” she asked, still staring outside.
“What? Dark magic?” Maia responded, her tone confused.
“Yes. Can you see it?” Allie asked again, her eyes narrowing on the swirling shadows that seemed to move just beyond the reach of the vehicle.
Maia and Zen leaned forward, peering out of the window with curiosity.
“No. We can’t see them,” Jhosie answered, her voice calm, but her words sent a chill down Allie’s spine.
“Really?” Allie asked in disbelief.
“Yes, Your Highness. Only Seers like you can see dark magic. That’s why it’s so dangerous for us to venture out.”
“But I can see them. They’re everywhere. It’s like they’re…” Allie’s voice trailed off as she froze, her eyes widening in horror.
Outside the window, dark smoke began to twist and coil, materializing before her eyes. It reached out as if trying to grab hold of her.
