ALLIE opened her eyes. Maia's lips were still on hers. When she tried to speak, it seemed to deepen the position of their lips together. Then, she felt it again—a sensation like electricity coursing through her body.

Was that from Maia?

Her eyes widened as Maia suddenly pulled away.

She didn't want her to stop!

"Allie, you're back! Oh, thank God," Maia cried, hugging her tightly with tears in her eyes. Allie chastised herself—that kiss wasn't a kiss. Maia had been trying to bring her back to life.

But wait, she didn’t drown, or die? Right?

"Sis!"

Only then did she notice Maricar at her feet. Maia helped her sit up, and her sister hugged her tightly.

"I thought I was going to lose you. I don't know what I'd do if something bad happened to you," Maricar sobbed.

Allie saw in her sister's memories what had happened at the hotel, how they had left, the faerie attack, and how they found her lying on the head of the water snake. She quickly turned to the ocean.

"Sage," she murmured, remembering her dream.

"What is it?" Maia asked.

"The water snake," she answered.

"She left after bringing you back to shore," Merideth said, who had found her.

"Thank you," Allie said gratefully.

"How did you end up in the middle of the ocean?" Maricar asked.

"I can't remember. The last thing I remember is sitting by the shore." Her thoughts flashed to her mother. It felt so real, but she knew it was just a dream.

"We need to leave now," Rhollieh interrupted after a moment, reminding them of their urgency.

Tumayo si Allie. "We need to go back to the hotel. We have to find out why the faeries suddenly attacked you," she said.

“Allie, that's dangerous," Maia replied.

"We need to go back, Maia." Allie's resolve was firm.

Maia simply nodded in agreement.

They walked toward the two vehicles parked by the shore. Once inside, Maia took Allie’s hand in hers.

"Promise me you won't leave without me next time. We almost lost you, Princess. I don't know what I would do if something bad happened to you."

Looking into her eyes, Allie cupped Maia's cheek. She could feel the fear radiating from her.

"I promise," she said, hoping to soothe her friend’s worries.

Throughout the journey, Maia held onto her hand tightly. Allie couldn’t help but recall Maia's lips pressed against hers earlier. Her cheeks flushed as she glanced at Maia, realizing that she was likely thinking about the same moment.

Quickly, Allie turned to look out the window to hide her embarrassment. Maia shifted a little closer.

"That wasn't a kiss. I was giving you mouth-to-mouth resuscitation," she whispered in Allie’s ear. If her companion had touched her cheek, it would surely burn from the heat of her blush. But then again, she remembered they were soulmates, so it wouldn’t really burn.

Maia whispered again, "I will give you a different kiss next time, my princess."

Allie's mind was suddenly flooded with imaginative images of that kiss.
