Everything was ruined. The city was in shambles.
"Is this the kingdom where Maia once lived?" Allie wondered aloud as they walked into the city.
The towering buildings were on the verge of collapse. The streets were split in two, and cars were abandoned in the middle of the road. Not a single person could be seen anywhere.
"Is this a ghost town?" Allie asked, the eerie silence unsettling her.
"Maia, what happened here?" Zenda asked in disbelief.
"We've been gone for thirty years, Zen. How am I supposed to know?" Maia replied, her voice filled with confusion.
"Thirty years?" Allie asked, her eyes wide in shock.
"Three years in your world is equal to thirty years here," Zenda explained.
"No cars, not a single soul. Where are they?" Maia asked, almost talking to herself.
"The palace?" Allie suggested. "If this is a kingdom, there must be a palace, right?"
"Yes, the palace. Let’s go," Maia agreed.
"I need to go ahead first," Zen said, preparing to scout.
"That's a good idea," Maia nodded. "Come back quickly if you sense any danger."
Zenda nodded in agreement.
Allie was stunned when, in an instant, Zen disappeared from sight, moving so fast it was as if she had vanished like The Flash.
"Wow, she really is a vampire," Allie said in amazement.
"You can teleport too," Maia reminded her, "but we can’t take that risk yet. I don’t know this place anymore, and we have no idea what dangers are waiting for us."
They continued walking cautiously, staying alert to their surroundings.
In the middle of the street, under the harsh sunlight, they made their way toward the palace where Maia had grown up. Zenda hadn’t returned yet, and Allie couldn't help but feel uneasy. "I hope she’s okay."
"There are so many cars," Allie remarked as they walked past the abandoned vehicles, now rusted and lifeless.
"They can only be operated by magic," Maia explained.
"So, no gasoline?" Allie asked, puzzled.
"None, only magic. We have airplanes, ships, cars, buses—everything your world has. But without magic, all of it is useless."
"Magic is dying," Allie realized aloud.
"Yes, magic is dying," Maia confirmed.
Suddenly, Zenda appeared in front of them. "They're waiting for us," she said urgently.
"At the palace?" Maia asked.
"Yes," Zenda replied.
A sudden wave of anxiety hit Allie. What’s waiting for me there? Maia must have sensed her fear because she gently held her hand.
"You'll meet my family. Don't worry, they’re on your side. And you’ll finally meet your grandmother," Maia reassured her.
"Is she a queen?" Allie asked.
"Not anymore. She passed the throne to your mother’s younger sister."
"My aunt? Is this her kingdom?"
Maia shook her head. "No, she is the queen in the Kingdom of Abel, and this is the Kingdom of Lourz. This is my kingdom. My father is the king."
Allie nodded, trying to absorb all the information. Maia was a princess. And she—she was a princess too, but a princess without a kingdom.
