The energy at school felt electric, buzzing with excitement and whispers. Damian Blackwood had taken the place by storm since he arrived, and everyone seemed to have an opinion about him. I tried to focus on my routine-lockers, classes, and the usual chatter-but my thoughts kept drifting back to him. Why did he seem so different?
"Aria!" Emma's voice pulled me from my thoughts as she appeared beside me, her expression practically glowing with enthusiasm. "You talked to him, right? What was he like?"
I shrugged, attempting to downplay my thoughts. "He seemed... fine. Just another guy, you know?"
Emma's eyes sparkled. "Just another guy? Aria, he's the hottest topic in school right now! There's something intriguing about him!"
"Maybe," I admitted. "But I barely know him."
Her grin widened, and I could tell she was already plotting something. "Oh, come on! You should totally get to know him better!"
Before I could respond, Ethan joined us, glancing at Emma with an amused expression. "What's this about Damian?"
"Just trying to convince Aria to talk to him again," Emma said, her excitement bubbling over.
Ethan's expression shifted, and for a brief moment, he seemed serious. "Just be careful, Aria."
I frowned, sensing the weight behind his words. "Careful about what?"
"Nothing," he replied quickly, brushing it off. "Just school stuff."
Lunch arrived, and the cafeteria buzzed with chatter. Damian sat at a table, surrounded by curious students. I watched him from a distance, feeling a mix of intrigue and unease. His presence was magnetic, yet something about him made me hesitant.
Lucas walked by, catching my gaze. His eyes narrowed as they landed on Damian, a flicker of annoyance crossing his face. That's when it hit me-something was off between them.
Emma leaned over, nudging me. "So, are you going to talk to him again?"
I hesitated. "I don't know... He seems... popular. What if he's just like everyone else?"
Emma rolled her eyes. "Oh, come on! He's not just 'everyone else.' You'll see."
Before I could respond, Ethan interjected. "Seriously, Aria. Just keep your distance if you feel uneasy. You never know."
The conversation felt loaded with unspoken truths, but I didn't have the slightest clue about what they meant. "Why are you both acting so weird?"
Emma waved me off, her smile still bright. "We're just curious to see how you handle everything."
After lunch, I found myself lost in thought as I headed to my car. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over everything, but I couldn't shake the feeling of being on edge. I spotted Lucas leaning against my car, his expression serious.
"Hey, Aria," he said, pushing off the car as I approached.
"Lucas," I replied, sensing something was off.
"You should really be careful around Damian," he said, his tone heavy.
"Why? What's wrong with him?" I asked, genuinely confused.
Lucas looked conflicted, as if weighing his words. "Just... trust me. He's not who you think he is."
I laughed nervously, trying to lighten the mood. "He's just a new student, Lucas. What's the worst that could happen?"
He shook his head. "You don't get it, do you? Just... be aware. That's all I'm saying."
Before I could respond, Lucas walked away, leaving me feeling more confused than ever. Why did everyone seem to be acting like there was something hidden beneath the surface? What was the big deal about Damian?
As I drove home, I couldn't help but feel like my life was on the brink of a change I wasn't ready for.
