One month had passed since Sebastian and I had made our relationship official, and despite the initial turbulence, things had started to stabilize. My powers had grown stronger, and with Damian and Clara's guidance, I felt ready to face whatever lay ahead. The looming threat from the Old Supernatural King-a being who sought to steal my powers-had cast a shadow over the preparations for graduation, but we were making progress.
The plan was coming together, but it required everyone's cooperation. Clara insisted that we needed all hands on deck, especially Lukas's. Despite the fact that we hadn't spoken in nearly two months, his anger and sadness weighed heavily on me, forming an emotional cloud that I couldn't escape. With Sebastian by my side, it was easier to focus on the positive, but I still felt the pull of Lukas's turmoil.
"Aria," Damian had said during one of our training sessions, "you need to talk to Lukas. It's not just for your sake. If we can bring the werewolf packs on our side, it could make all the difference."
I knew he was right. I couldn't ignore my past with Lukas any longer, but the thought of confronting him made my heart race with anxiety. Would he even want to speak to me after everything that had happened?
With my resolve firming, I stood outside Lukas's house, staring at the door as if it were a portal to another world. Taking a deep breath, I knocked. A few moments later, Marcus opened the door, his expression neutral.
"Hey, Aria," he said, stepping aside to let me in. "Lukas is upstairs."
"Thanks," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. I climbed the stairs, each step amplifying the uncertainty in my chest.
As I reached Lukas's room, I paused, hesitating at the door. Memories flooded my mind-the laughter, the easy banter, and then the fallout. I took another deep breath and knocked.
"Come in," came his nonchalant voice from the other side.
I pushed the door open, and there he was, lounging on his bed, scrolling through his phone. He looked up, his expression blank. "Oh. It's you."
"Hey, Lukas," I said, forcing a smile that felt more like a grimace.
He sat up, placing his phone down. "What do you want?"
I swallowed hard. "I wanted to talk. About... everything."
"Everything?" he repeated, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Like how you've moved on with Sebastian while I've been stuck here feeling like shit?"
The bitterness in his voice stung, and I took a step closer, trying to keep my voice steady. "Lukas, I know you're angry, and I'm sorry for how things ended between us. But we need to talk about what's coming. There's a danger, and I need your help."
His expression hardened, and I felt a flicker of fear. "I don't think I can help you with that, Aria. You've made your choice."
"Please," I implored, my heart racing. "It's not just about me. There's a supernatural king who wants my powers, and we need everyone's help to stand against him. Your pack could make a difference."
He leaned back against the wall, arms crossed, and I could see the conflict in his eyes. "And what makes you think I'd care to help you now?"
"Because you care about the people in your pack," I said, my voice growing firmer. "And if we don't stop him, he could destroy everything we know. I know I hurt you, but I'm asking for your help. For all of us."
Lukas's expression softened just a fraction, but it was enough for me to press on. "I can't bear the weight of this alone. If you don't help, I don't know what will happen to everyone."
His silence was deafening, and I could sense the emotional turmoil roiling within him. "What do you want me to say, Aria?" he finally asked, frustration bubbling beneath the surface.
"I want you to be part of this," I admitted, my voice breaking. "I miss our friendship. I miss you. I know things have changed, but that doesn't mean we can't work together. You mean a lot to me, Lukas."
He ran a hand through his hair, a flicker of vulnerability crossing his face. "You have no idea how hard it's been for me. Watching you move on with someone else while I'm here... it's not easy."
"I didn't want it to be like this," I confessed, my heart aching for him. "But I can't pretend that I don't have feelings for you. I'm still trying to figure it out, but I need you by my side. You're stronger than you know."
He looked away, the tension in the room palpable. "You say that, but all I've felt is betrayal."
"Please," I urged, desperation creeping into my voice. "Help me stop this king, and we can figure everything else out later. Together."
Lukas's gaze returned to me, and I could see the internal struggle reflected in his eyes. After what felt like an eternity, he nodded, albeit slowly. "Fine. I'll help. But don't expect everything to go back to how it was. You've changed, and so have I."
"Thank you," I said, relief flooding through me. "That's all I'm asking for."
He sighed, the anger in his expression softening, if only just. "You're lucky I care about my pack."
"And I care about you," I said, hoping he could hear the sincerity in my voice.
"Let's see if you can prove that," he replied, the ghost of a smirk tugging at the corners of his lips.
For the first time in weeks, the weight on my chest lifted, if only a little. I knew we had a long way to go, but at least now we were on the same side again. With Lukas's help, we could face the challenge ahead, and hopefully, rebuild what we once had.
