The music pulsed around me as I swayed to the beat, but inside, I felt a storm brewing. Damian's presence enveloped me like a warm blanket, comforting yet stifling. The more I tried to enjoy the party, the more I felt the weight of his expectations pressing down on me.
"Are you having fun?" Damian leaned in closer, his voice low and smooth. I nodded, forcing a smile that didn't quite reach my eyes. Deep down, I felt something shift-a creeping discomfort that clung to the edges of my mind.
I needed a moment to breathe. Excusing myself, I slipped through the throng of bodies toward the bathroom. The door clicked shut behind me, and I leaned against the cool wall, taking a deep breath. I splashed water on my face, hoping to wash away the fog of confusion that clouded my thoughts. Why did I feel so trapped? Was I really enjoying myself, or was I merely playing a role to please him?
As I stepped out of the bathroom, the noise of the party hit me like a wave. I took a deep breath, preparing to face whatever awaited me. But as I turned the corner, I collided with a solid figure.
"Aria!" Lucas's voice cut through the music like a knife. He stood there, his expression a mix of frustration and concern. "What the hell are you doing?"
I froze, the words hanging in the air between us. "I shouldn't be talking to you," I said, my voice shaky. I didn't know why I felt this way. Lucas was a friend-wasn't he? Yet, the way he looked at me made my stomach twist.
"Why not? Because of him?" He gestured over his shoulder, and I could only assume he meant Damian, who I could see mingling with the crowd, flashing that charming smile that had won over so many.
"Yes! I mean... no, it's just... I shouldn't," I stammered, feeling the tension crackle in the air. "You're bad news, Lucas. I don't feel safe around you."
He stepped closer, his intensity palpable. "Aria, he's sucking the sense right out of you without you even knowing." His grip tightened around my wrist, and I felt a surge of anger and fear mix within me. I wanted to pull away, but his hold was surprisingly firm. "You don't see it, but he's manipulating you."
"Stop it!" I snapped, yanking my wrist free. "You don't know what you're talking about." But deep down, a part of me wondered if he was right. What if Damian was twisting my perceptions? Why did I feel so compelled to push everyone else away?
"He was right! I knew you all would just hurt me!" I blurted out, the frustration spilling over as I turned on my heel, desperate to put distance between us. I needed to find Damian, to feel that safety he offered, even if it was an illusion.
As I rushed back into the main room, my heart pounded in my chest. I spotted Damian across the crowded room, laughter spilling from his lips as he chatted with some classmates. He caught my eye and smiled, but I couldn't shake the unease that lingered in the air.
I rushed to him, slipping my hand into his. "Damian!" I breathed, as if he were my lifeline. The weight of his gaze settled over me, and I felt a sense of calm wash over my frantic thoughts. "I... I need you."
"Are you okay?" he asked, genuine concern etched on his face. It made me feel warm inside, like I belonged. "What happened?"
"Just... nothing." I shook my head, unwilling to share my confrontation with Lucas. I hated that I felt compelled to hide things from him, yet I feared his reaction. "Let's just stay together tonight."
"Of course," he said, wrapping his arm around my waist possessively. The gesture both comforted and unsettled me. "You know I'll always be here for you, right?"
As the night wore on, I tried to push thoughts of Lucas and the confrontation from my mind. Instead, I focused on Damian, his laughter, and the way he made me feel. But in the back of my mind, a whisper of doubt nagged at me, reminding me that something wasn't right.
I could feel the weight of their stares, Lucas, Sebastian, Jaxon, Emma, and Ethan watching from a distance with expressions that mirrored their concern. But I hated the way it felt-like I was a puppet in their game, dancing to a tune I didn't understand.
With every passing moment, I could feel myself distancing from them, pulled closer into the orbit of Damian, who made me feel special, even if I knew deep down that something was wrong. As the party raged on, I couldn't shake the sense that I was teetering on the edge of a precipice, unsure of what awaited me in the darkness below.
