When I finally stepped through the front door of my house, a wave of euphoria washed over me. My mind was still buzzing from the night spent in Damian's world-a world that felt so intoxicating, yet so strangely disorienting. I had basked in his attention, relished the warmth of his presence, and allowed myself to forget the chaos that lurked just outside the periphery of my consciousness.

But as I turned the doorknob to my bedroom, my heart dropped. There, pacing the floor like a caged animal, was Lucas. The moment I saw him, the air in the room turned electric. He looked furious-his eyes glowed with an intense silver light that sent chills down my spine. The anger radiated off him like heat from a flame, and I found myself rooted to the spot, unable to move or look away.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I managed to ask, trying to sound defiant but failing miserably. My pulse quickened, echoing in my ears like a drum.

"I'm done keeping you in the dark," he snapped, stopping mid-stride to fix me with a piercing glare. "That filthy bloodsucker is going to drain every last drop of you, and they're perfectly okay with leaving you alone-but I sure as hell am not."

Confusion swirled within me, battling the fear that coiled in my stomach. Lucas's words were harsh, and yet, as I stared into his glowing eyes, I couldn't shake the unsettling feeling that there was some truth in his fury.

"W-what do you mean, Lucas?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. "You want the truth? You want out of the dark you have every right to be in? It would keep you safer. But I'm selfish; I'm a selfish person, and I hate you being so far up his ass that you can't see anything besides him."

"Yes." The word slipped from my lips before I could stop it. I meant to say no, to deny whatever wild accusations he was making, but the conviction in his voice made my heart race.

"He's a fucking bloodsucker," he spat. "He's placing everything in your head exactly how he sees fit. He doesn't care about you, Ari. He just needs leverage, and you're perfect for that."

"A bloodsucker?" I repeated, the phrase echoing in my mind like a foreign language. No, that can't be true. It was absurd.

"Don't play dumb, Ari. You know what he is," Lucas growled, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "And while we're at it, I should just let it all out. I'm a shifter. Wolf, exactly. Sebastian, Emma, and Ethan are hunters, but Emma and Ethan don't claim that side of them, so they're friendly. And oh, Jaxon is a vamp too."

The walls of my reality felt like they were closing in on me. I was going to pass out.

"Drink this," he said suddenly, thrusting a vial of bright green liquid into my trembling hands. The color was striking, almost mesmerizing, and I stared at it, bewildered.

"I'm not him, Ari," Lucas said urgently, his voice softening as he stepped closer. "I would never hurt you. And I actually mean that."

I hesitated, teetering on the edge of understanding and denial. The pleading in his eyes tugged at something deep within me, something that wanted to believe him. Slowly, I opened the vial and drank the contents, feeling the cool liquid slide down my throat.

The moment it hit my stomach, a wave of clarity washed over me, bursting the fog that had settled over my mind. Suddenly, everything became vivid-the sounds around me sharpened, the colors of my room brightened, and my thoughts cleared like a newly polished window.

And then it struck me.

Every time Damian had looked me in the eyes and whispered sweet words, I had felt almost drugged, entranced by his charm. Each moment had felt like a dream, but now I could see the truth lurking just beneath the surface.

It was all a lie.

"Lucas..." I whispered, my heart racing as the implications of what he'd said began to sink in. "Is it really true?"

"Every word," he confirmed, his expression earnest. "I wouldn't lie to you. You deserve to know the truth."

My world began to spin as I tried to process the information. Damian wasn't just the charming new kid at Evernight High; he was something much darker, something dangerous. And I had been blinded by my infatuation, ensnared in his web of manipulation.

"I-I need to talk to him," I stammered, but even as the words left my mouth, I felt a surge of doubt.

"No, you don't," Lucas insisted, stepping in front of me, blocking my path. "He'll only pull you back in. You can't let him do that. You have to stand your ground, Aria."

I could see the truth in Lucas's eyes, his anger now morphing into concern. "You have to trust me."

Taking a deep breath, I nodded, feeling the weight of his words settle heavily in my chest. I was tired of being manipulated, tired of feeling like a puppet on strings. "What do I do now?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Lucas exhaled, relief flooding his features. "We'll figure it out together. But first, we need to keep you safe. You can't let Damian get to you again."

And for the first time in weeks, I felt a flicker of hope igniting within me. The truth was a double-edged sword, cutting through the illusion that had clouded my judgment. It was time to take back control of my life, to find my own path amidst the chaos that threatened to consume me.
