A few days had passed since Lukas had agreed to help, and the weight of uncertainty still hung over me. It was a Sunday, and everyone had gathered at my house for a training session. Ryan, Emma, Ethan, Clara, Sebastian, Jaxon, Lukas, and Damian filled the backyard, a mixture of energy and tension in the air.
The atmosphere was charged with a nervous excitement, but I could sense the underlying currents of frustration, particularly from Lukas. He acted like he was indifferent, throwing out quips and teasing remarks, but I could feel his emotions-angst, resentment, and a flicker of hope beneath the surface. I didn't let him see that I could read him so well; it was easier to keep the facade going.
"Alright, everyone!" Clara called out, standing at the center of the yard. "Let's focus. We're all here to work on our abilities, and we can't afford distractions."
Lukas rolled his eyes but remained silent, leaning against a tree with his arms crossed. I noticed Ryan shoot him a concerned glance, and my heart sank a little. I didn't want to put him through this, but we needed his skills.
"Let's divide into groups," Clara continued. "Ethan, Emma, and Sebastian, you three work on your hunter skills. Damian and Jaxon, you're together for speed drills. Lukas and Ryan, you two are on shifter abilities. Aria, you're with me for your angel and witch training."
As everyone dispersed, I felt a pang of guilt toward Lukas. He had stepped up to help, but the bitterness between him and Jaxon simmered just beneath the surface, and I worried about how long it would last.
"Are you really okay with this?" I asked Lukas quietly as Ryan joined him.
"Sure, just peachy," he replied, his tone flat. I caught a hint of sarcasm, but it didn't hide the tension in his posture.
"Look," I said, lowering my voice. "I know this isn't easy. I appreciate you being here, but we're all in this together. You don't have to pretend with me."
He met my gaze, and for a moment, his facade wavered. "What do you want me to say, Aria? That I'm thrilled to be training alongside a bunch of people I can't stand?"
"Or maybe you could focus on the fact that we need your help," I countered, trying to keep my tone light. "Every bit of progress counts."
He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I get it. I'm just not sure how to act around you anymore. You're with Sebastian now, and that's... complicated."
"Sebastian's great," I said, "but you know that doesn't change how I feel about you. I want us to be friends again, or at least get to a point where we can work together without all this tension."
"Yeah, well, we'll see how that goes," he said, his voice gruff.
As Ryan and Lukas moved off to practice their shifter abilities, I turned my attention to Clara, who was setting up a series of runes on the ground. "What's the plan for today?"
"Today, we're going to focus on harnessing your powers, specifically how to control them when emotions run high," Clara explained. "I want you to connect with the elements around you, but keep your emotions in check. That's the key."
I nodded, taking a deep breath. "Alright, I'm ready."
Clara guided me to the center of the yard, and I closed my eyes, feeling the gentle breeze wrap around me. I focused on calming my thoughts, picturing Alex and the stability he brought into my life. The wind picked up slightly, swirling around me as I embraced the connection.
"Good, good," Clara encouraged. "Now, visualize the energy flowing from you and into the elements. Feel the power, but don't let it overwhelm you."
As I concentrated, I summoned small cyclones of leaves, allowing them to dance around me in a delicate balance. I felt a rush of exhilaration; I had come so far in mastering my abilities.
