Lukas didn't return for a while, leaving an uncomfortable silence hanging in the air. The atmosphere shifted as Clara and Damian focused on helping me channel my powers. I could feel the weight of Lukas's absence pressing down on me, but I pushed the thoughts away, determined to make progress.
"Think of something that grounds you," Clara suggested as we settled back outside. "Something you can focus your energy on."
I closed my eyes, trying to block out the chaos of emotions swirling in my mind. Images of my brother Alex came to the forefront. He had always been a constant in my life, a source of joy and support. Focusing on that bond, I felt a warm energy pulse within me, steady and strong.
"Now, channel that energy," Clara urged, her voice encouraging.
I opened my eyes, looking down at a few fallen leaves scattered on the ground. I concentrated, envisioning them lifting gently into the air. To my surprise, the leaves began to rise, swirling in a small cyclone around me. Tiny sticks joined them, dancing in the breeze of my energy.
"I'm doing it!" I exclaimed, astonished. The excitement bubbled within me, and for a moment, the tension of the day faded away.
"Keep going! You're getting the hang of it!" Clara cheered, clapping her hands.
I focused harder, the leaves moving higher and the sticks swirling faster. A giggle escaped me, pure joy flooding my veins. Suddenly, I lost control, and the leaves tumbled to the ground.
"I did it! I really did it!" I jumped up, adrenaline surging through me, and instinctively leaped into Damian's arms, wrapping my arms around his neck in a tight hug.
"Thank you! Thank you so much!" I exclaimed, my heart racing.
But just as I basked in the moment, I heard a heavy footstep behind me. I turned my head and froze. Lukas stood there, mouth agape, disbelief etched across his face.
"What the fuck?" he said, his voice low and dangerous.
I quickly pulled back from Damian, my heart dropping.
"It's-" I started, but Lukas cut me off.
"What the fuck am I even waiting on, Aria? I'm over here beating myself up for pressuring you, and you're flirting with Sebastian and all over Damian! You know, I didn't ask to be tied down to your slutty ass either, but, god damn, let a guy know when you're not interested?"
His words hit me like a physical blow, leaving my jaw hanging open. Pain surged through my chest at the accusation. Slutty. That's what he called me.
"Don't talk to her like that," Damian said, his voice low and menacing. His eyes had turned a furious red, the familiar gray gone from his irises.
"Yeah? What are you going to do about it?" Lukas shot back, fury igniting in his tone. "She's just playing with your emotions like she plays with mine."
"You don't get to dictate how she feels or who she spends time with," Damian growled, taking a step toward Lukas, anger radiating from him.
I felt the air between them crackle with tension, but before I could interject, Lukas huffed in frustration. "You know what? I don't care anymore," he muttered, shaking his head before turning to leave, his footsteps heavy as he stormed off.
As Lukas disappeared into the distance, I turned to Damian, my heart racing from the confrontation. I could see the conflict in his eyes as he looked at me. The fury faded from his gaze, and the vibrant red melted back to gray, leaving me feeling raw and exposed.
"Aria..." he began, but the words stuck in his throat.
I took a shaky breath, tears threatening to spill. "Why did he say that? I'm not... I didn't mean to lead anyone on," I stammered, my voice trembling.
"I know," Damian said softly, his eyes softening. "Lukas is just... overwhelmed. He cares about you a lot, and he's struggling with all of this."
"But that doesn't excuse what he said," I insisted, anger bubbling up in me again. "He had no right to call me that."
Damian stepped closer, his presence grounding me. "You're right. You deserve better. No one should ever speak to you like that."
I swallowed hard, emotions swirling within me. "I thought we were getting somewhere with my powers. Now everything feels so messed up."
"We were making progress," Damian reassured me, placing a hand on my shoulder. "You're stronger than you realize. It's just... the dynamics are complicated."
I nodded slowly, feeling the warmth of his touch seep through the tension in my chest. "I just wish Lukas would understand that I'm trying to figure this out. I don't want to hurt anyone."
Damian studied me for a moment, his expression thoughtful. "You won't always be able to please everyone, Aria. Sometimes you have to prioritize what you need, too."
His words resonated within me, and I realized I had been so focused on everyone else's feelings that I hadn't fully considered my own.
"I'll talk to him," I said, determination filling my voice. "I won't let his words control me."
"Good," Damian said with a nod. "You're stronger than you know."
Just then, Clara stepped forward, breaking the tension. "How about we take a break? Let's grab some water and regroup. I think we made enough progress for today."
I smiled at her, grateful for the distraction. "That sounds good."
As we headed back toward the house, I felt a mixture of emotions swirling within me. I knew I had to face Lukas and address what had happened. But I also felt a newfound sense of empowerment after my small victory with my powers. I was ready to confront the chaos ahead, determined to find my footing amid the storm.
