Monday morning rolled around, and the atmosphere at Evernight High felt different. Whispers filled the hallways about the supernatural ball, but as I entered the cafeteria, a strange knot tightened in my stomach. My usual spot at the lunch table felt more complicated than ever.
Lucas wasn't there. Instead, Sebastian was sitting close to me, his arm casually resting on the back of my chair as he engaged in conversation with Emma and Ryan, who was animatedly recounting some story from the ball. Ryan's red hair stood out in the sea of students, and I found his hellhound charm oddly comforting. Still, I couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted between me and my friends.
"Where's Lucas?" I asked, glancing around the bustling cafeteria for a glimpse of him. My heart sank when I realized he was nowhere to be seen.
"He's probably avoiding us," Sebastian replied, his tone light but with an edge I didn't miss. "You know how he gets around...well, me."
My cheeks flushed slightly, and I fiddled with the hem of my shirt. It was true-Lucas had never been one to hide his disdain for Sebastian, and the tension between the two had reached a boiling point at the ball. I couldn't help but feel responsible for the friction, especially since I had danced so freely with Jaxon.
"Maybe he just needs some space," Emma chimed in, her voice full of empathy. She was still bubbling with excitement from the night of the ball, glancing over at Ryan, who grinned back at her. "I mean, it was a big night for everyone."
Sebastian nodded but looked at me with a seriousness that made my heart flutter. "Still, you should talk to him, Ari. He's your friend."
"Ari?" I echoed, surprised. "You're calling me Ari now?"
He shrugged with a playful smirk. "Just thought it suited you better. It's cute."
Before I could respond, my eyes darted toward Damian, who was sitting a few tables away. His gaze was fixed on me, but there was no anger in his eyes-only something softer, a hint of concern that made my stomach twist. I quickly averted my gaze, feeling a mixture of confusion and frustration. I didn't want to deal with him or the emotions he stirred in me.
Just then, the cafeteria door swung open, and Lucas strode in, his silver eyes scanning the room. My heart raced as our eyes locked. For a split second, it felt like the world around us faded away, but then his gaze shifted to Sebastian, and I watched as his expression hardened. He approached our table, and my breath hitched in anticipation.
"Hey," Lucas said, his tone neutral but with an undercurrent of tension. "What's up?"
"Just talking about the ball," Emma replied brightly, oblivious to the tension brewing. "You should've seen Aria! She looked stunning!"
"I know," Lucas said, his voice sharp. "I saw her." He turned his gaze back to me, and I felt a rush of warmth. "You looked incredible, Ari."
The way he said my name sent a thrill through me, but I could also sense a flicker of jealousy in his eyes as he glanced at Sebastian, who had leaned back in his chair, clearly unbothered.
"Thanks," I replied, trying to maintain my composure. "It was fun."
As we settled into a conversation, I could feel Jaxon's presence lingering at the edge of my thoughts. He had been acting differently since the ball, his mood shifting from easygoing to tense and withdrawn. I noticed him watching me closely, a furrow in his brow as if he were piecing together a puzzle I couldn't see.
"So, are you two dating now?" Ryan asked playfully, nodding toward Sebastian and me.
"What?" I exclaimed, surprised. "No way! We're just friends."
Sebastian smirked, clearly enjoying the banter. "At least not yet, right, Ari?"
I shot him a glare, but my heart raced at the implication. I could feel the weight of Lucas's gaze on me, the tension thickening in the air.
Suddenly, the cafeteria door burst open again, and Jaxon walked in, his expression taut. He scanned the room, locking eyes with me for a brief moment. I felt an inexplicable pull toward him, but then he turned away, his posture stiff.
"Great," I muttered under my breath, anxiety prickling at my skin.
"What's wrong?" Emma asked, concern creeping into her voice.
"Nothing," I lied, but the truth was hanging heavy in the air. The night of the ball had thrown everything into disarray, and I was caught in the middle, torn between friendships and unspoken feelings that swirled around me like a tempest.
As the lunch bell rang, signaling the end of our meal, I knew one thing for certain: I needed to figure out where I stood with everyone before the chaos of emotions consumed me entirely.
