Damian was relentless. After the milkshakes, he insisted we go to the get-together, and no matter how much I tried to protest, he wouldn't have it. He even threw my own words back at me-"you never know what's going to happen"-and, after that, I shut up and let him drive.
When we pulled up to Lucas's house, I hesitated at the door. It had been so long since I'd been around everyone. Damian must've sensed my apprehension because he nudged me gently forward.
"It'll be fine, Aria," he whispered.
As soon as we stepped inside, the room fell silent. Everyone was there-Ethan and Taylor were huddled together on one couch, Emma and Ryan on another. Jaxon sat with Haley on the loveseat, and Lucas stood by the window. Every eye turned toward Damian and me, wide with surprise.
Emma was the first to break the silence. She grinned, crossing her arms with an approving nod. "Of course you were the one who got her out."
At that, the tension in the room dissolved. People smiled, the conversation resumed, and soon I found myself swept into their chatter. For the first time in a long while, I felt like part of the group again. They didn't push me to talk about Sebastian or the battle. They didn't tiptoe around me. It was exactly what I needed.
We played some silly games, laughed at old memories, and for a brief moment, my mind drifted away from the heaviness that had settled over me since the battle. It wasn't perfect, but it was a start.
Later that night, I wandered into the kitchen, seeking a moment of quiet. I poured myself a glass of water, trying to settle the emotions that had been swirling all evening. That's when I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned to see Lucas standing in the doorway, watching me. He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I know things still weren't perfect between us after everything that's happened, but I gotta say... it's damn good to see you."
His words hit me harder than I expected. For a long moment, I just stared at him, feeling all the weight of the last year pressing down on my chest. And then, without thinking, I walked over to him, fast, and threw my arms around his chest.
Tears slipped down my cheeks, but I didn't make a sound. I just held him, feeling the bond between us-a bond that had been impossible to ignore, even through the mess of our relationship.
"I'm so sorry, Lucas," I whispered, my voice trembling with the emotion I'd been holding in for too long.
He didn't say anything at first, just wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight. We stood there in silence for a long time, the unspoken words and feelings finally finding a place to rest.
He had been there for me, even when I hadn't deserved it, even when everything had fallen apart. And now, standing there, I realized just how much that had meant.
"You don't have to apologize," Lucas finally said, his voice soft. "We've both been through hell, Aria. But we're still here. That's what matters."
I nodded against his chest, the tears still falling, but somehow, they didn't feel as heavy as before. Lucas had always been there, and maybe, just maybe, we could start to heal from everything that had happened.
