It was Sunday, the last day for us to train before we returned to the chaotic halls of Evernight High. The backyard buzzed with energy as Damian, Clara, Emma, Ethan, and Ryan joined me in my efforts to harness my powers. Despite the camaraderie, I felt the absence of Lukas weighing heavily in the air. He hadn't come over since our last confrontation, and I couldn't shake the hurtful words he had thrown at me.
The sun filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows across the grass. I tried to channel the calm I often found in thoughts of Alex-my brother, my constant. With his laughter and unwavering support in my mind, I reached deep inside, focusing on that serene feeling.
"Okay, Aria, let's see what you've got," Clara called, breaking me from my reverie.
I closed my eyes, drawing on the energy within me. A soft breeze stirred, lifting a few leaves from the ground. With a deep breath, I concentrated harder, feeling the power swell. Before long, a cyclone of leaves and small sticks danced around me, swirling with life.
Just as I was about to revel in my success, thoughts of Lukas and the harsh words he had spoken crept back into my mind. Anger simmered beneath the surface, and I didn't want to fight it. Instead, I let it fuel my focus, turning the fire within me into something tangible.
I aimed the swirling energy toward Ethan, who stood nearby, trying to contain his laughter. In a moment of inspiration, I lifted him off the ground and spun him around effortlessly. The laughter of my friends faded into stunned silence as I set him down gently, my heart racing from the unexpected display of power.
But when I looked up, I realized that their expressions weren't merely ones of surprise; they were shocked, almost terrified. I blinked, confused, and suddenly realized why. My vision was entirely consumed with pure white light. There was no trace of color in my eyes-only a brilliant, glowing white, accompanied by wisps of smoke curling from them.
"Whoa, Aria!" Ryan gasped, stepping back.
I opened my mouth to respond, but no words came. I was just as stunned as they were, unsure of what had just happened. After a few moments, the blinding light faded, and my vision returned to normal, the world coming back into focus.
"Are you okay?" Emma asked, her brow furrowed with concern.
But my gaze was drawn to Clara, who stood frozen, her hand covering her mouth in disbelief.
"I-I know what you are," she stuttered, her voice trembling slightly.
A shiver ran down my spine as I felt the weight of her words. I couldn't bring myself to respond; I merely nodded, urging her to continue.
"You're an angel, Aria," Clara said, her eyes wide with revelation.
My heart raced as I processed her statement. An angel? The very idea sent waves of confusion crashing over me. I had always felt different, but this? It felt unreal.
"I don't understand," I finally managed to say, my voice barely above a whisper. "How can that be?"
"Your powers, the white light..." Clara explained, stepping closer. "It's not just magic. It's something much deeper. You're a hybrid-a mix of angelic power and witchcraft. It explains why your powers have been so difficult to control. You have a divine heritage."
I blinked, trying to grasp what she was saying. The reality felt like a jumbled mess of thoughts and emotions, but beneath it all, something else sparked within me-a sense of identity, a sense of belonging I hadn't known I needed.
"But Lukas..." I began, thinking of his harsh words, the frustration and jealousy that had clouded our connection. "He doesn't know about this. He thinks I'm just some-"
"Don't let his words define you," Clara interrupted gently. "You're more than what he thinks. You're powerful, Aria, and you have a purpose that goes beyond the petty squabbles of high school. Embrace who you are."
A small part of me wanted to reject her words, to hide from the truth that suddenly felt so overwhelming. But as I looked at my friends-their expressions shifting from shock to admiration-I felt a flicker of resolve ignite within me. I wasn't just Aria anymore. I was something greater, something extraordinary.
"What do I do now?" I asked, feeling the weight of my newfound identity.
"We keep training," Clara said, a determined glint in her eyes. "We figure this out together. You have the potential to be a force for good."
Nodding, I took a deep breath, letting the gravity of the situation settle over me. The world outside my window seemed vast and full of possibilities, but with it came the challenges I'd have to face-not just with my powers but with the tangled emotions of my relationships, especially with Lukas.
As we resumed our training, I felt the stirrings of hope in my chest. I was ready to embrace this new chapter in my life, even if it meant navigating the storm ahead. And for the first time, I felt a glimmer of excitement for what was to come.
