Ever since he turned eighteen, Hyunjin dreamed about moving out from his fathers apartment flat to get his own- preferably at least another country away.
It hadn't been hard to find an affordable run-down apartment the furthest away from the city that he possibly could, and turns out, things played out even better than expected.
Of course, when his dad found out that he used the money he had been saving up to put as a down payment for an apartment rather than helping in tuition, he got pissed and nearly threw him out with the promise of a black eye and a split lip, but it wasn't something new. Hyunjin could withstand it.
Which was why he felt even more victorious when he finally got the apartment key from the landlord who seemed to have an issue making eye contact with him. Or eye contact in general. Hyunjin couldn't see his eyes past his long hair and scraggly beard.
The college in the town was nice, he had researched. It was a small arts school since the population of the town was abysmal, but that was just what Hyunjin was looking for. A small art program with little to no contact to the outside bustle of the world. Peace and quiet.
"Thank you," Hyunjin gave a slight bow to the antisocial landlord before lugging himself and all three of his duffle pages packed with belongings up two flights of stairs because the elevator apparently never worked.
Hyunjin was asthmatic, but he was sure that if he could survive the awkward seven hour drive with a random trucker he had hitch hiked with, then he would live climbing a few flights of stairs everyday.
Maybe the exercise would be beneficial to his legs and his weak lungs.
His entire life had been packed away (which mostly consisted of art supplies and clothes)- and sadly, it fit in the three bags that he carefully deposited to the floor once he figured out how to work the busted lock of the apartment door. The apartment itself wasn't a lot to gawk at- the window was cracked and spiderwebs hung from nearly every dark corner. The lights occasionally flickered and the heater took a few kicks to start, but it was his home that he had paid for all by himself, so he was proud of it.
Hyunjin dutifully took out his sketchbook to jot down a home improvement list that would surly span all the way down to the bottom of the page, as well as a grocery list for sustenance that would keep him alive for the next few days before he made an actual ingredient run.
He had a few days to settle down before classes started up, so Hyunjin would try his best to get the decrepit apartment to look habitable until then. At first, Hyunjin had been excited about the prospect of having neighbors, but he quickly figured out that apparently he was one of five residents in the entire apartment complex and he had the whole third floor to himself.
That would surely be better, wouldn't it? A little lonely, but better.
Apprehension still creeped into his stomach when he finally left the dreary apartment complex. He tried his best, standing on his tiptoes to remove the spider webs, relocating the spiders on his balcony so that they could make new homes and kill the annoying mosquitoes. He rolled out a futon in his new room and stacked some art history books next to it in a makeshift nightstand. The important canvases that he brought along with him, he hung from the walls, but the rest he was forced to leave at his dads apartment.
His dad would burn them, probably.
Nothing was ever permanent in his life anyway, so he tried not to be too bothered by it.
The weather here was a lot cooler than what he was used to, and Hyunjin decided that he could blame it on the altitude change of the small town nestled in the mountains. He shrugged on a thick red sweater over his turtleneck for extra warmth when he left to explore the town and find the local market. (His apartment door refused to lock all the way or even close, but if someone wanted to rob them, they would be sorely disappointed at his lack of necessities. The most expensive thing Hyunjin owned was his shitty phone and acrylic paints.)
