Arrow wrapped his arms around himself and Katana began praying to Thor. We knew what was coming. The dragons growled uneasily. The Nadder nervously scratched claw marks into the snow and Bonecrusher nudged Arrow apprehensively.
I stared at my friends in disbelief. What happened to fighting? Viking spirit? None of that had been reincarnated in my friends. I stood up and took one last look at my friends' bewildered faces, and then swung my right foot into the Nadder's stirrup. Up and over. If the dragon came back, they would need Bonecrusher for his fire and strength.
Arrow yelled something at me, but I ignored him. I sat on the dragon still as my dead body would be. Arrow stood and motioned for me to get down desperately. I shook my head firmly. "I have to do this, Arrow!" I shouted, wishing my ego was as big as my words.
Movement suddenly stirred in the corner of my right eye. I whipped around, sent one last frenzied look at my friend, and headed in that direction. And thank the gods, it did not appear as big as the Snow Wraith Gothi had constructed in my horrified brain. However, I had not idea what it could be. Ironically, I wished Hiccup was here. When I saw the dragon, I urged the Nadder after it. She illuminated the snow ahead of us. It barely helped. As soon as the fire vanished, I couldn't see anything.
Had I made the wrong decision? All of a sudden I was thrown off my dragon. I rolled backwards through the snow. I shrieked, but luckily the ground was not far. The Nadder landed beside me, unconscious...or worse. I lay there, winded, and still. For a moment, everything was peaceful. "AHHH!" I screamed as I felt claws dig into my shoulders. I looked up and almost cried with fear. My abducter, my unseen enemy, maybe even the dragon of my dreams-was a Woolly Howl. It lifted me off the ground easily and looked down at me. The dragon opened its mouth and roared in my face, exposing its purple mouth and tongue, which had a red V on it.
It looked so remarkably like a Night Fury I was thrown into shock...and also into snow. I attempted to get up, groaning. My shoulders hurt from the claws. Thor, I was high. At least I'd have a good view when I met the god. My foe roared at me, when I realized I could see her. The snow was letting up!
I crab walked backward hurriedly, fearing that those violet aster-colored eyes would be the last thing I ever saw. I hastily grabbed my ragged knife out of its holster, holding it out in front of me with both shaking hands. The dragon roared, advancing with spread wings and a haughty stance.
She was medium sized, and had strange brown scales on the back of her neck that resembled a mane. She was just like a Night Fury otherwise, with a white-tan body. I felt a wave of calmness course through my veins. I was a Viking. I could do this! Setting down the knife, I looked away. I had to be brave like Stoick, brave like Hiccup, brave like...a dragon rider. I began a long, difficult soldier crawl forward. The snow was cold. The wind was unforgiving. The consequences for failing were harsh.
I lay myself down at her feet, willing myself to be calm. The moment dragged out. She did not make a sound. My foe stood there, wary, curious, and cautious. But she also did not back away. Like Hiccup had done many times before, I reached out my hand to the Woolly Howl's face. I had no idea that my life was about to change forever.
