~Melina's POV~
I didn't think he could do it. But, as always, my boyfriend was fabulously unpredictable. He always exceeded my expectations. After he and the Alpha Skrill had touched he had stared into the dragon's eyes and, without turning away, said, "I'll be fine, Mel."
"What?" I had said, when suddenly, the Skrill had thrown him onto her back and flown off towards the mountain. I remembered calling his name, and feeling a sense of abandonment. Deja-vu stung me as I realized he must have felt like this when Karma had stolen me away. He had left me-again.
I tugged my pillow around my head tighter, having just told Kyrra what had happened. She was talking in a low voice to Vera nearby. Karma was out finally getting her algae, having led several people to the river, and Spark was being seen to by Gothi. Karma's wing had pretty much healed thanks to a homemade salve by her.
I had a feeling her little expedition earlier had taken its toll, however, though she hadn't shown it had the time. A Skrill Alpha. I still couldn't believe it, and I wanted to follow him-again. I had been a little angry at him for lying to me the other day, and my anger was renewed at his leaving.
I forced myself to calm down, burying my face into my pillow. I would take Karma if I could. I didn't feel like using an Academy dragon though. Was he really going to get over Bonecrusher this easily? I wondered what he would name the Skrill.
I heard Kyrra and Vera head outside and Staraster pad after them. I listened to their conversation. "Hiccup!" Kyrra exclaimed. "Hiccup? What about Snotlout?" I heard Snotlout pout. I shut my eyes, exhausted, not really caring about them anymore. Hiccup ignored him and informed them of what had happened. "I located them when I was flying back." Right before I fell asleep, I heard Hiccup's final words echo in the silence.
"They found Dagur!"
~Arrow's POV~
I coasted the warm winds above the mountain, topped upon my Skrill like chocolate on a pie. I had decided to call her Shadow. I had known when Karma and Shadow were hovering as soon as we met eyes that she would be mine, and I would be hers. Her dark purple wings spread out alongside me, and electricity crackled through them for a moment.
Shadow roared aggressively, and in the distance several roars responded. I clasped my hands around her neck, assuming this wasn't good. I missed Bonecrusher so much-I missed his horns for my hands, his beautiful colors, his sweet demeanor.
But I knew with Shadow my new life was beginning. She was sleek, fast, powerful, and fierce.
Her underbelly had been white when I had glimpsed it earlier, her emotions black. I couldn't enjoy our first flight though, because I got the sensation she was kidnapping me. However, I knew how to train Shadow. I had been secretly looking up on Skrills lately, them becoming one of my new favorite dragons after Melina describing Skrillvo to me-my dragon's murderer.
The Book Of Dragons was not very informative on the subject, but it did mention their weakness was water. I was sure eel wouldn't be a delicacy either. A Skrill flashed up beside me on lightning, careful to stay just a tiny bit behind his superior. He growled through his teeth when he saw me, lightning crackling along his body.
I heard another crack of thunder starboard. Lightning flashed behind the cloud next to us. I looked over to see the other two Skrills in tow, on the same bolt for half a second, their wings wrapped around it as they emerged through the cloud. The bolt sliced through it, and we left it in its dust.
One of the dragons had white dots speckled around his nose and he snarled at me when I stared. I felt a shiver run through me as they locked their eyes on me like chains, the wingbeats seeming to echo.
Then suddenly, I was pulled through the sky, teleported. "Ahhhh!" The wind whipped at me and lightning was just above my head, Shadow's wings a cave around me as she grasped it. However, she only used one, the other over me to protect me...from the heat? I felt it burning down on me nonetheless. In a second it was over, and I almost cried, feeling like my soul had been frayed. I yelped as my knife slipped out of its holster. I watched it fall sadly as it rumbled through the air. I could always get another one. I stared at my bracelet from Melina, just glad that that was still on.
The silhouette of the lightning lingered in my eyes. How many miles had we traveled? Was Mel looking at the bolt from Berk? Thunder sounded just above my ears where the lightning had been. I resisted the urge to cover my ears, the deafening sound all around me. The ride had been so fast, so terrifying, so amazing, so quick I barely had time to feel fear.
I squeezed Shadow, breathing heavily, and staring at the ground. I had just been the first Viking ever to ride lightning. I smiled just a little, hearing more booms as the other Skrills appeared beside us. This was where I was meant to be. I would not only be a dragon rider, I would be a lightning rider!
I released my hands from Shadow's neck, and raised them in the air triumphantly. "Arrow, Arrow, oy oy oy! I laughed, mimicking Snotlout. Shadow growled, amused.
~Melina's POV~
I was in the room again. Dagur leaned against the door, the tiny window behind me reflecting moonlight on his face. "Can you just leave me alone," I sighed, knowing I would've crossed my arms then if I could. The Berserker laughed, his face ghostly. "The thing is, Melina-" I was taken aback at my name- "You don't seem to realize this. I'll haunt you forever. I'll never stop. You're doomed to fear your tortured sleep."
Dagur ducked out of the light theatrically. I swallowed with a shiver. That couldn't happen. After all, this was all a figment of my imagination. A cold breeze gusted through the window. "You're wrong," Dagur whispered.
"What?"
"I said you're wrong."
...? I wasn't sure what he was talking about. Unfortunately that was usually the case.
"This is real. And you know it, too."
"I'm sleeping."
"Then how is this real?"
"It's real because you're being dragon dung as usual."
"Ouch."
"If it's real then wake me up."
"Will you believe me?"
"Sure."
"One last thing for you, Lina." Dagur snickered in the dark, his laughs sounding all around me.
"I'm starting a war."
His words would reverberate in my ears long after he was gone.
And then a couple of seconds later I was staring into my pillow with the ugly thoughts that Dagur could control my secret dreams-and that he was going to attack Berk.
~Arrow's POV~
Shadow had ridden lightning almost without stopping until we got to land, so I had not seen where we where going. If I would've I'd have had the best landmark ever-more ocean! My dragon bucked me off of her into a dark cave. I coughed on the ground, on my hands and knees. I felt electricity vibrating through me, sizzling in my hair. I saw a tiny bit of water in a little hole carved into the cave floor. I shed my boots and put my feet in, trying to get rid of the electricity.
It stung like fire. I grimaced, clenching my teeth. That's the thing about pain-it demands to be felt. Shadow retreated to the cave entrance where she could warily watch me. It hurt so bad, but finally my leg began numbing. I tried a smile, just a small one, when I thought of the mistake Shadow had made in imprisoning me. I drank a minimal amount of water and sat against the back cave wall, breathing heavily.
I didn't know what her plan was, but I knew she was Strike Class-very fast, very smart, and very aggressive. I did, however, know what my plan was. I had to show her I was a predator too. I took the remaining water, though my throat yearned for it, and poured it into my boot, smoothing my spiked hair.
I still felt all charged up. Could I ever get used to it? I would have to if this was going to work. I had thought those same things when Mel and I had first kissed, except it was a good used to it.
I crept towards the Skrill, noticing the other ones were just outside, the one with the spotted snout in sight. I thought it ironic how much Kyrra had always wanted a Skrill.
Shadow hissed, displaying her glowing wings as she blocked the entrance. I hid my boot behind me carefully. She opened her mouth, unhinging her jaw and extending it, revealing a colossal pink tongue. Silly dragon. Before she realized what I was doing-time stopped to accommodate me-I threw the water from my boot all over her wing.
All that could be heard was sparks rebelling in the silence.
