Arrow still stood in his doorway, surprised. I crossed my arms. "Well, are you coming or not?"
"Meet you there in 10," he said, about to shut the door. I stuck my foot in the doorway, blocking it. "Do you know where Melina is?" I asked curiously. "Your sister? Nope. Why, is something wrong?"
"No, it's just that she goes off somewhere every morning now and I'd like to know where." I hoisted myself onto Staraster. "Let me know if you find her, and tell her I'm at the race." Arrow flatly nodded and went inside. He didn't care. I sighed and we departed.

The stands were full of cheering Vikings. The dragon riders and some other people like Heather, Gustav, and Gobber were all assembled at the starting line. Staraster hopped up unto the starting line, making dragon-y noises.
I spotted Arrow in the stands, and reminded myself to ask him to return my knife. A Viking blew the starting horn and we leaped off the the platform. I had watched these races so many times I knew exactly what to do.
Hiccup was actually here for once, and Toothless zipped through the air, easily catching the fluffy sheep. "Come on, Star!" She flapped her wings as hard as they would go, and for the first time I truly felt how fast she was. I tried not to scream but a yelp escaped. Staraster growled, amused.
I tucked my head down and watched as we neared Toothless. He snarled as Staraster came up beside him. "Exceeding my expectations already!" Hiccup said, and then he abruptly tucked Toothless into a spiral. I chuckled, plotting my revenge. Right after I heard the sound of fire and felt heat whizz past my right leg. I turned my head, blinking. Stormfly, Staraster thought, annoyed.
She was right. Astrid laughed as Stormfly smacked Staraster with her tail. This did not please my dragon.
She roared furiously. Put your head down, she suggested. I trusted her, and didn't look up. I hadn't even made her a saddle yet, or anything to tell her where to turn or go up or down. She did it all on her own.
We were nearing the sheep baskets. I heard Barf and Belch's hiss and crackles behind us. Gobber cried out as the explosion knocked him off his dragon. Staraster suddenly turned her head to the right and fired back at the Zippleback, winding it. "Good job, girl!" I praised.
With a burst of speed Staraster raced forward, roaring. She opened her mouth, and I heard a sound like the about-to-fire of a Night Fury. Hiccup looked back. I couldn't see the look on his face because of his mask, but I am sure it was surprised.
My dragon fired, sending out an extremely powerful blast of ice and water...that glowed. It hit Toothless' legs with such force he yelped and dropped the sheep. We were there in half a second. "See you at the finish line, Hiccup!" I crowed.
Staraster looked back at me laughingly, grinning. I leaned over and smiled at the sheep captive in her paws. It baa-ed at me, terrified. I sat up, just as a plasma blast sounded above us. I covered my ears; It sent us down. Staraster spiraled over the guest sheep basket. The crowd cheered.
She roared, firing in delight. It glowed again. "What is that, girl?" I murmured. It definitely wasn't ice sparkling in the sunlight. I resolved to tell Hiccup later, if he lived when we were done with him.

The horn sounded, several laps later. Its tone went up at the end. "The black sheep!" I heard Astrid exclaim behind us. "Come on Stormfly, we can still win this!" I heard the Deadly Nadder's sqawk. Staraster growled, and determinedly pushed forward.
"Come on, Kyrra!" I heard Arrow shout. Staraster grinned, her tongue flopping out. She suddenly shook her head, growling, like she was trying to get water out of her ears. Then my ears also encountered a strange noise. Staraster looked back at me, confused. It took me just a second to figure out what it was-the Night Fury's call. "Duck!" I cried. My dragon spun crazily. I screamed and struggled to hold on.
"Nice to see you Kyrra!" Gobber said, smiling. "You'll be sea-ing the ocean soon enough!" His dragon Grump blasted molten fire at us, and again Staraster dodged. My dragon turned back and taught Gobber a lesson he wouldn't soon forget. I laughed crazily. Gobber's helmet had fallen.
Just as I was thinking it odd I hadn't see her in a while, Heather's Razorwhip zipped by us, neck and neck with Gustav.
Staraster soared over them and easily blasted the space between them with glowing ice shards. Heather had a puzzled look on her face. I could relate. I hooted back at them. Gustav's dragon Fanghook attempted to scorch me, and Heather shoved him off his dragon while he was distracted. I enjoyed his little yelp, but I looked back ahead and saw that Snotlout was in possession of the black sheep.
We had gotten three sheep so far, but Hiccup had four, and if we didn't get the black sheep we would lose. Staraster sensed my distress and growled. We will win this. I wanted to stroke her head but I was holding on for my forsaken life. Heather suddenly appeared and forced us aside. My Howl went rolling and smacked her wing in the rock wall centerpiece. She cried out.
"Heather, you dragon dung!" I yelled. Staraster howled at her and blasted the air next to her. She flipped over as a result and hung upside down from her dragon. Staraster could have taken the chance to blow her to pieces, but she focused on Fishlegs, who had the sheep in his chubby, giddy arms.
I noticed Staraster wasn't flying as fast now, presumably because of her hurt wing. "Staraster, you can do this! You are better, faster, stronger, prettier, more agile, and more powerful than all of these dung eaters!" I yelled. "You are a Woolly Howl, and you will win!"
She roared so loud I had to cover my ears. I could imagine her already purple mouth turning even more purple with luminescent rings as she wound up her "fire." This time Staraster's call was exactly like Toothless'. I grinned, tears coming out of my eyes from the wind.
My shell-shocked ears could barely detect Arrow and Kat cheering for us. I glanced at them, wondering if I should cover my ears as the call's pitch grew higher and louder. Staraster's mane slowly began glowing a dark blue, like the ocean was inside her. The other dragon riders looked back (and forward) at us in shock. Even the crowd hushed, confused. In slow motion, Hiccup looked back again, just in time to meet his doom.
My Woolly Howl fired a plasma blast aimed straight at the Chief's face.
