~Melina's POV~
"Dagur, wake me up! Right. Now," I ordered, thrashing. "You can't just hold me hostage for two days! I have to eat you know! Dagur, you dragon dung!"
"Lina, Lina, as long as your sister cooperates, you'll be fine," he grinned. "Even if she doesn't, I can still marry you, and still attack Berk, and still do it with that dragon of your sister's." He tilted his head with a giggle. "You have Staraster?!" I asked disbelievingly.
"Yes, pay attention. Didn't I tell you Loki is my spy?"
My face paled. Kyrra!
~Kyrra's POV~
"Holly! Holly slow down! Holly!"
The Changewing swooped through the air, turning invisible under my legs. I wrapped my arms around her neck, squinting against the wind as she accelerated. I reached for my bag with much effort. I shoved some algae into Holly's mouth. She munched, slowing to a glide.
"Okay. Okay. There's a good girl." I scoured the ground, looking for my dragon and Loki but finding nothing. I resolved to fly back to Berk. I knew that the Wraith always passed by it. I didn't know that it would come by this Flightmare Island.
Holly seemed content to stay not far above the trees. Loki and Staraster could fly back. I attempted to steer Holly out to the sea. She hissed a little but eventually gave in. We coasted to the north side of Berk's mountain, struggling through the small flurries; it was extremely difficult not to go see my sister but the sun was setting. The Snoggletog Wraith would come soon.
~Arrow's POV~
I sat by Melina's side. Shadow sighed at my feet, snorting sparks. I had been neglecting her a little because I'd been so worried about my comatose girlfriend. Kyrra, too. The Snoggletog Wraith was coming tonight and I was hoping Melina and I could see it together. I'd asked Vera if she'd like to ride Karma in the meantime and she'd agreed.
"What's going on in there?" I muttered, watching Melina's face. She looked . . .tense, worried. I shook myself. That was ridiculous. I needed to get out. "Come on, Shadow," I murmured. "We'll see this thing alone."
Taking one last look at Melina I headed outside.
Shadow zipped over Berk, half her normal speed. I wanted to see something. She pushed up to Gothi's hut, perching on top. I could her the elder taking care of her Terrible Terrors inside. "Shh," I told my Skrill. Wind blustered around us but Shadow was warm. I'd definitely see Kyrra if she came back now, I thought as I stared past the mountains.
And I did see something. I saw Staraster, flashing under the clouds for just a moment, like a shooting star before I lost sight of her.
~Kyrra's POV~
Holly and I curled up against each other on the frosted grass, the snow having melted the day before. I liked her, but I missed my Woolly Howl. I hoped Staraster was okay. A flash of doubt crossed my mind about Loki, but I threw it off. He wouldn't steal her from me, right?
Out of the clouds up ahead something white appeared. It was a major contrast against the night, coming out of the darkness. I sat up, thinking it was my dragon, but it was something else entirely. It had a green mane and wings and a red bow on its tail. What looked like Snoggletog red ribbon and yellow bells were wound around its tail in a pattern. Not a Sand Wraith. Or a Snow Wraith. Or even a Woolly Howl.
"The Snoggletog Wraith," I whispered.
Holly snarled, spotting it. I mounted her and we took after the evasive beast. It was much faster than my Changewing. Holly tried to tail it but soon it vanished into the clouds. I curled my lip like a dragon. If I was on my Woolly Howl we'd have that thing.
It banked, appearing as it dove under the sheer ceiling of mist. It was heading towards Berk. I wished I could flightsuit after it like Hiccup. It was definitely on the leaderboard of the weirdest dragons I'd ever seen, but it was pretty in its own way.
It plummeted, diving down and soaring over the village. Something sparkled by Gothi's hut and I saw Shadow's unmistakable sparks and the tiny figure that was Arrow. People pointed up at the Snoggletog Wraith in awe. Lights sparkled in the village and Snoggletog decorations were wrung in the air across it and twined around the houses. The statue of Stoick by Meade Hall was adorned in red ribbon and bells.
Holly swooped after the dragon with a burst of speed. When we got close enough I frantically waved to Arrow. He stared at me open-mouthed before Shadow zipped over to me. Holly growled, flinching back as she hurtled beside us. Shadow flared her wings, blowing us backward as she stopped.
"Kyrra!" Arrow exclaimed. Before I realized it Holly opened her mouth to fire at Shadow. I jerked her head to the side and green acid flew through the air. Holly roared angrily. Jumping off of her, I reached out for Shadow and Arrow, crying out. For a moment, I was weightless, falling, and then I crashed into Arrow's arms. Over his shoulder the Wraith headed out to sea.
Breath forced itself out of me as I pummeled into my friend. "Go, Shadow!" he ordered, but I was barely on. Holly furiously fired at us, and Shadow dodged with a roar. Arrow moved me to sit in front of him on the saddle. I could feel the electricity nearby, even though the saddle didn't conduct it.
Shadow glared at Holly, roaring, and spread her wings wide, setting them alight. Holly shied away, recognizing dominance, and Shadow whipped around. Arrow's leg shifted against mine as he clicked in the direction she headed on the saddle. I shoved his foot away, and ordered Shadow after the Snoggletog Wraith with my heel.
I hesitantly grabbed onto Shadow's saddle, left with no choice. We would definitely catch the Wraith now. The town and ocean blurred into water colors and tears invaded my eyes . I was sure my skin smelted off.
"Why are we following the Wraith?" Arrow yelled. "Soon!" I yelled back. He started to say something but we reached the dragon. Shadow slowed, gliding just above it. A growl vibrated in its throat. Up close I could see the extent of its tribal markings. Its mane and back was white and instead of having violet eyes and tongue it had sky blue. I couldn't tell if it had a V on its tongue. At last! I was so close.
The dragon turned, reminding me unbearably of Staraster. It was male, and I breathed a huge sigh of relief. "Shadow, edge maneuver," Arrow said, and his dragon turned so that one wing almost tipped the waves and another reached skyward. I scrabbled for a grip, struggling for breath. The Skrill turned and blocked the Snoggletog Wraith's escape, unhinging her jaw and turning up the voltage. Lightning shot into the water and at the tips of her wings.
The other dragon winced. It flipped around and rushed back towards Berk. Shadow corralled it, hot on its tail. I knew there were caves around the side of Berk. I shifted Shadow's direction, earning a grunt of complaint from Arrow.
We were hot on the dragon's heels as it zoomed around the towering, pillar-like islands of Berk's roots. It veered right, flying under a huge arch. We were almost to the caves. Shadow sped up, and instantly the Wraith splashed into the water, showering the Skrill and then resurfacing. Shadow cried out in dismay, hovering as her electricity died out.
Seeing the huge opening in the side of Berk, the Woolly Howl breed turned left, hurrying into the darkness, leaving our mount hovering and dazed.
