~Kyrra's POV~
I woke up in the middle of the night, panting, a wisp of my dream floating out the...open window? A breeze whistled through my dark room, moonlight illuminating the empty space next to me where Staraster usually lay. Out again? Maybe it didn't have anything to do with Bonecrusher. I groaned. Last time I had to do this I had borrowed Spark and found her exploring over a remote island nearby. What was she looking for?
Tonight, however, Spark was on Ruff and Tuff's search party team for Arrow. Melina had tried to convince Hiccup he was fine but the Chief hadn't taken her seriously. Speaking of Melina...I heard a noise downstairs, and glanced towards the dark stairway. Only one person would be in a mischievous mood tonight. Staraster excluded.
" "Midnight snack" again?"
I stood like a phantom at the foot of the stairwell, staring at my sister as she poured herself water from the rain barrel. She made a startled noise and turned to look at me, her face dripping wet and surprised. Her hair, loose for once, twined around her face and leaked the liquid down her arms.
"Kyrra! Uh, I..."
"It's okay, Melina. Another nightmare?"
I heard the wind blowing through my window upstairs.
"Yeah."
She picked up the candle she had set on the counter and it flickered strange shadows on her face.
"Good night."
I watched her go upstairs, her stairwell behind mine, leading up above my room and over some. I wondered if she was in on Staraster's heists. I listened to her footsteps retreating in the dark, the light fading as she turned a corner. When I was sure she was gone I went over to the barrel and stuck my fingers in it.
It was freezing.
~Arrow's POV~
After I had splashed water on the Alpha I had lunged forward and pinned her snout to the ground. The electricity had faded from her wings and she had briefly allowed me to rest my hand on her nose. She had huffed smoke out of her nose, and closed her eyes.
Our relationship was improving, ironically. I backed away from her now, pulling off my other boot and tossing it to the side. I picked up the one I had thrown water on Shadow with and raised it. She cowered, snarling. I tossed it over my shoulder, still watching her, to show her I meant no more harm.
The Skrill stalked towards me on her two frog-like legs, her wings pinned to her sides. I put out my hands and tread a half circle with her, which was difficult in the narrow cave, telling her to keep her distance with the gesture. Her white underbelly was the only thing giving away her position. I listened to the bugs chirping outside, and the other Skrills shifting. "Good girl," I breathed. She flinched at my words and backed up towards the others. "It's okay, I promise, I won't hurt you again."
Skrills were sure harder to train than Woolly Howls, it seemed. Shadow went back to the cave opening and curled up beside her Storm, still watching me. I could see her eyes glowing in the dark. Her electricity had barely shown itself since the water.
I decided to name the spotted one Frost, the purple and black one Twilight and the other purple and white one Echo. I hoped they wouldn't keep me here much longer because I was thirsty and I had used my water. I also hoped the gang wasn't looking for me -- it would ruin Shadow and I's relationship.
My throat felt itchy as I sat across from my boots, a position where I could still watch the Skrills in the narrow cave. It was so dark it was a little scary. I wished Melina was here right now. After only a few minutes I needed to see what was out there, the kind of need I had felt when trying to scream at Bonecrusher's death.
I crept along the rocky, rough cave floor on all fours, my hands and feet scraping against the rocks. There better not be spiders in here. It was a mild night, but I felt hotter than a star. Echo glanced up at me from her sleeping position, curious as I neared. Shadow poked her head over to see what Echo was looking at. My trainee rolled over, snorting sparks onto the grass and igniting it just for a moment. She was watching me upside down, her wings in the air, the undersides a dark white-tinted purple.
"Hey," I cooed. Frost made a noise, unhappy that I was coming over, and he sauntered across the grass over to where he could lay against a sheet of rock, Twilight on his tail. I peeked around, not quite out of the cave. We were in a tiny valley, in a tag corner of four connecting, giant walls of rock. I tried to think of which islands had mountains. I couldn't quite see the top. Was this where they lived? If I could only find out the location.
To my immediate surprise Shadow came over to me. Well I wasn't that surprised. I prepared to be shoved back into the cave (den?) with her powerful wings but instead she sent me tumbling down and flopped her body across me. I laughed as for the second time (the first when I had done my Snotlout imitation) she looked slightly happy.
Shadow sighed on my chest, her body warm even without electricity.
I fell asleep with my dragon as she stared at the stars.
~Melina's POV~
I didn't even open my eyes this time. The water hadn't helped. I didn't even know what was real or a fallacy anymore. "Dagur, I know you're real, okay? Leave me alone, and please don't start a war!"
Chuckles. "If I were to do that, dear Lina, I'd need something from you."
Trust me, you will.
I shook it off. "The only thing you're getting from me is hate."
Dagur sighed, tsking.
"The sun's rising. I have to go soon, so don't make this difficult."
I was suddenly teleported onto the ground, and I felt something cold constrict around me. Dagur grabbed my wrists and pinned them down, leaning over me. I struggled upwards, but I was unable to. My wet, loose hair fanned out around me as I squirmed on the cold ground. Dagur's red hair shone like a beacon above my face. His retired breath crawled over my exasperated face. The Berserker's grip on my arm tightened and moved up to my fingers with his proposal. I gritted my teeth as he squeezed them. He was literally insane.
"If I were to stop this war I'd need one thing from you -- your hand in marriage."
I woke up staring at my crimson fingers with grip marks carved into them, like they had already been claimed.
Or branded like property.
