~Kyrra's POV~
Tomorrow was Snoggletog Eve. Just like Melina had once, I had a crazy idea to train a yearly dragon -- The Snoggletog Wraith, a variant of Woolly Howl with Snoggletog like markings that we based our decorations off of. Fishlegs said they were extremely rare, only appearing on the Eve and all, and there was possibly only one.
So, I would train it, and then attempt to breed it with Staraster to bring the species back from what could be the verge of extinction. It would have to be male of course. I planned to follow it once it appeared and find out where it goes and if there's more of them.
No one could know yet, not even Staraster, except for Loki. I was bringing him with me. He would be an asset considering all his good and bad experiences with dragons. As Staraster and I returned from fishing, flying over the village, we spotted Arrow, Loki, and Melina with their dragons. A pregnant Astrid was chatting with visiting Heather outside of Meade Hall and races were ensuing.
"Kyrra!" Loki waved as my dragon swooped in, flaring her wings and landing with a bump. "We'll catch you later," Melina grinned, sliding her arm around Arrow. My stomach rolled as they looked at each other happily, and then they mounted Karma and took off.
I stretched, meeting Loki's eyes. "Let's go flying," he suggested. Sighing, I climbed onto Staraster, who grumbled to herself, staring at me annoyingly. But I'm tired. Is this really necessary?
"Come on Star, it won't be for too long," I convinced, playing with her mane before latching onto her saddle. "So, what did you do before Berk?" I asked Loki as we went airborne. Staraster flashed her mane, possibly curious.
Loki tightened his grip on my waist, uncomfortable with the question. "My parents trained me to kill dragons," he admitted. Staraster growled unhappily. "Some villages still don't get along wth dragons," he said defensively. I thought about that, stroking Staraster's neck. They were missing out.
Pulling my braid over my shoulder, I nodded, the wind whistling around us. "I'm sorry," I said quietly. "And you never met a dragon you couldn't kill? One you bonded with?"
He was quiet for a moment. "No." Loki played with my braid, tucking it under my shirt. "Well, there was one."
"Go on." He sighed on my neck. "I had a Razorwhip. But then, he went feral after he found a mate." I flinched, my hand resting on my Howl's warm neck. "That must have been terrible."
"It was." Staraster flapped upwards, forcing through a wet cloud. The peaks of Berk poked through up ahead. "I've seen a Woolly Howl," he started. Staraster tensed under me, instantly interested. "Did you kill it?"
Loki quickly backed off. "No, no. Once when I was riding my Razorwhip in a snowstorm we spotted one. But not white like Staraster. Brown, the normal color. I haven't seen anything like your dragon."
Good, Staraster smirked. She shot a plasma blast, lighting up the cloud ahead of us. She was weakening, I could tell. I grabbed a fish out of my sack and fed it to her, but she landed on the side of the mountain, just like what happened with the Flightmare.
The gang flew past us blindly, laughing about something, probably going to check for dragons. The Death Song hadn't come back, and I hoped it was gone for good. Loki dismounted Staraster after me, scratching her chin. She rolled over happily, blending in with the snow.
"Name five dragons you've never seen more than one of," I ordered Loki. He laughed. "Flightmare, Night Fury, Stormcutter, let's see, Death Song, Quaken." I didn't even know what a Quaken was, but I nodded. "The five dragons without forked tongues?" I knew this one.
He scratched the back of his neck, smiling adorably. "Flightmare, Snaptrapper, Snow Wraith, Woolly Howl, and . . .Razorwhip." I nodded, getting back on Staraster who rolled back over. "We should get Mel and Karma some algae as a belated birthday present," I smiled, feeling my new dagger.
We went into the clouds as the sky darkened. Staraster lit up her mane to my surprise and repeatedly shot plasma blasts. Was she used to this? Light flakes drifted down on our shoulders and I shivered. Loki wrapped his arms around me and buried his face in my furry hood.
My dragon descended once it felt like we were getting close. It had taken a while to get to the stream. Karma led us all here once. We dove down to unexplored forest that the glowing river ran through. We could see the water's eerie glow all the way in the air. Could there be more Flightmare's here?
I took my satchel when we were on the ground and began spooning algae into it. The water was cold. My hands began glowing a dull, sickly green. Loki looked around in awe, at a loss for words. When my bag was full I brushed off my hands to no avail. "Uh, Kyrra?" Loki began.
I turned to find my Woolly Howl indulging in the algae in my bag -- and she was glowing a bright, pale pink. "Oh my Thor!" I laughed, taking the bag from her. Loki was bent over cracking up. "Did you know they could do that?" he grinned.
"We need to explore this place," I insisted, rising and swinging my bag over my shoulder.
"But what about --"
I put my finger on his lips, casting a significant glance at my ridiculous looking, girly dragon. "She's smarter than she looks, I promise," I whispered. Staraster raised her head as I looked back, cocking it and humming to me. I like to whisper too.
"We'll spend the night here and leave tomorrow," I stated, turning to look at the winding stream and then the setting sun over my shoulder. "Well, you know your dragon better than anyone," Loki shrugged, his armor clinking. Grabbing a long stick, I started writing in the mud, mostly getting distracted by my hands. Staraster joined in, like a sun in the night, clenching it in her teeth, but she just drew squiggles.
I brushed off my hands again. "We'll be back in two days," I read, turning to Loki, who was dipping his feet in the water. As night took over the glow reflected on his silver uniform. I sighed, shaking my head at him, and then joined him.
"You better not disappear tonight," I scolded Staraster, who was now swimming in the water and laughing. The only thing that remained of her were her violet eyes. "We're on a strange island and no one knows where we are. You're on strict orders to guard us." She sighed, worming out onto the bank beside me. She turned all the way around and dragged her tail along the dirt, firing her snow along the perimeter of her resting circle before flopping down.
"Good night, Loki," I murmured tiredly.
"Have a good sleep, Kyrra."
