~Melina's POV~
I opened my eyes and saw the ocean rushing towards me. The waves were suddenly higher. I felt like I was already dying, like the wind was skinning me. I felt the dragon rider mask I had made earlier that day flap against my back.
I had had great ambitions for training the Flightmare. I had not expected that I would die under Arvindal's Fire, the gods' mood ring that for once was a happy color. I heard an otherworldly shriek and attempted to look back, up towards the mountaintop.
Staraster wasn't coming to get me because her wing must have been in pain from the tenacious flight up to me. I saw a glowing blue light against the black night and was shocked. The dragon that had just killed my friend was plummeting towards me! I spread out my hands like I was sky-diving to slow my fall.
She let out a siren and spiraled under me, catching me. The breath was forced out of me but I wrapped my hands around her neck. My legs were out behind me, wildly bouncing against the Flightmare's back.
She called out to me, slowing to a glide. We coasted on the dark air. I finally got my legs in front of my dragon's wings. I loved her glow. It was eerie in the night; she was like a lantern saying, I'm right here! She glanced back at me. I stroked her head softly, wondering absently if the glow would come off on my hands.
She dipped downwards smoothly, angling towards the ocean I was about to end in earlier. I laughed, resting my cheek upon her head. Tendrils drifted off of it like a fish's, and under it. The only sound was the wind and the Flightmare's wings flapping softly.
I turned my hand over. Sadly, it didn't glow. I heard shouts below us, off to the right, and suddenly I saw dark shapes that had to be the dragon riders coming towards us. The Flightmare shrieked, and I squeezed my eyes shut.
"Into the clouds," I told my friend's murderer. She obeyed and glided in the dark masses. I knew it wasn't her fault that she had killed Katana. She was just scared, and defending herself. Staraster had been about to shoot her with, probably a plasma blast.
I stroked her head, and pulled on my black mask on that was similar to Hiccup's design. "My friends will never forgive you," I told her softly. "They won't understand. They loved Katana too much, and I can't risk them hurting you. We need to go somewhere far away, where you can be safe."
I heard Toothless' unmistakable call below us. I shivered unconsciously, and rubbed my Flightmare's head again. At the worst time, I was feeling guilty about her. This dragon had killed my friend, and what did I do?
I flew away from my other friends who needed me, and now I was going to be killed by the Chief of Berk. It was karma. "Karma," I whispered. The dragon hissed in her throat, acknowledging me. "I'll call you Karma."

~Kyrra's POV~
I sat in shock, watching as snow frosted on my friend's face, blending with the Flightmare's mist so I couldn't tell which was which. Arrow had woken up a few moments ago, and explaining to him what had happened had been like accepting reality.
"It took her again," he muttered now, angry. He had barely looked at Kat's face. I thought of how he and Melina had looked at each other the past few weeks, and how Melina had so respectfully stuck Katana's dagger into the snow like a gravestone.
The handle was coming apart, and a small piece of cloth fluttered in the wind. I realized suddenly where Melina had been going in the mornings, and felt blind for not having realized before.
Meanwhile, I was freezing. My body was wracked with the cold, and Arrow was spasming.
I was about to ask if Staraster and Arrow could help me move Katana down to Bonecrusher, but I realized it then-we were stranded up here until our dragon's healed. I wasn't sure if Melina had managed to train the Flightmare, but I knew she had to come back if we were going to live.
I didn't think our dragons would be healing as well in the cold. Arrow slid over to me, shivering, his teeth chattering. I hadn't really noticed the cold until the initial shock of Kat dying had faded.
Surprisingly, I didn't really harbor any bad feelings about the Flightmare. Staraster was about to shoot it with a plasma blast on my orders, so it was my fault. The dragon wouldn't have sprayed its mist in our direction if not for me.
Arrow and I huddled, taking comfort in each other's warmth. "We should go down to Bonecrusher," I said quietly. He frowned, confused. "We have no way down," he said. "You're wrong," I countered, smirking as Staraster sauntered up to us, grinning goofily.
"I'm wrong? Uh, no. That dragon can't fly."
"No, but she can glide," I said slyly.

~Melina's POV~
Karma zipped through the clouds, showing off her sonic speed, or that's what it felt like. It took all my energy not to whoop. I heard the dragon riders behind us, and the shooting of plasma blasts.
"Come on, Karma," I urged, feeling a rush of adrenaline course through me when I said her name. She called to me softly, pleased, putting on a quick burst of speed upward. I squished her tightly with my legs, trying hard to keep a grip.
The dragon riders abruptly flew up in front of us, startling me. Karma made a high-pitched shriek in distress. "We found you...dragon rider," Hiccup said smugly. I understood how Heather must have felt when first flying from Hiccup and Toothless.
Stormfly squawked proudly. My Flightmare hissed aggressively, low in her throat. The dragon riders circled us, dark shapes in the night. The only light came from my dragon. I tucked my braid into my hood, keeping my face low to Karma's head, and my back hunched.
Hiccup advanced quickly, coming to a halt a few yards from us. Toothless' teeth glistened menacingly in Karma's light. "Now tell us, tamer of the Flightmare. Who exactly are you?"
