*~Hiccup's POV~*
I landed quietly outside the Berserker camp. "Toothless, stay," I commanded. He growled softly, protesting, but I ignored him. I crawled over to the edge of a sheet of rock. Toothless tugged on my prosthetic foot. "No!" I ordered, and he drew back, frustrated.
There was a netting of metal, in large squares (holes) that looked exactly like our Academy roof. Were they training dragons down there? I moved back, barely poking my head over the small cliff.
Something was glowing down there. I turned to look for Toothless, but his head was right beside me. He smiled, panting, and then we went back to spying. I took out my spyglass and held it up to my eye. The Flightmare! I still couldn't believe that it had been Melina on it. The Berserkers dragged it out of a cell with ropes tied around it.
It shrieked and flapped its wings at the Vikings. I knew that meant it was either frustrated or wary. Probably both. Toothless hissed, rumbling a growl. "Come on, bud," I whispered. He called to me as I crawled away, and jerked his head at the Berserkers.
Before I could stop him, his mouth was glowing and he had blasted the rod that held the roof up! I put my arms over my head as stray pieces boomeranged out over my head. Toothless called out in alarm as a wire flew towards him. He ducked quickly.
"What were you thinking?" I snapped, and then I noticed that the Flightmare had not taken the chance to escape-it had gone back inside. Toothless leaped off the cliff and bounded after it, with me on his back.
Gretel had left bread crumbs for us in the forms of frozen Berserkers. Toothless whined, as unnerved as I was. It was eerily quiet, until the screech of the Flightmare sounded up ahead. Toothless sprinted; I bounced against his back.
He growled lowly, and I tucked my head low to his. I could hear yells up ahead that were abruptly cut off. Toothless roared softly and we stopped at the corner. The tunnel continued to the right. We inched our heads around it.
The Flightmare was standing guard over several bodies. It hissed at us, raising its wings. I ducked back around the corner, breathing heavily. Toothless shrugged me off of him and carefully rounded the corner! "Toothless, no!" I whispered worriedly.
Toothless walked slowly, lowering his head to the ground. The Flightmare backed up a little, racking her tongue against her teeth, making a strange sound. My dragon rolled over, passively onto his side, and snubbed his face into the dirt.
He was submitting! I watched in awe, remembering something Astrid and Valka had said once. "He's challenging the Alpha. To protect you," I said, repeating them to bring it back. The Flightmare wasn't the Alpha, but she was dangerous, and we needed her on our side.
The glowing dragon raised her head and wings, accepting the surrender. Then she turned and bounded down the tunnel. The sound echoed in the bright, cool corridor. There was a door at the end! Toothless followed suit, not looking back.
I sprinted after him, my fake foot rubbing against my shin awkwardly. He was almost there! I forced myself even faster, panting, imagining the consequences if I didn't get there in time.
Toothless blasted the door open and for a moment everything was covered in smoke. I covered my eyes with my arm, and when I moved it away my ears were ringing and I was on the ground. I breathed heavily, and began the final stretch in slow motion.
I couldn't see anything; it was like a firework had just been lit. "Tooth-less!" I yelled, drawing it out. Everything was quiet, and when I saw what was on the other side of the door, reality kicked back in.
There was a person sitting in a chair, coughing on smoke. Several walled torches had fallen and had started a small fire. It was Melina! The Flightmare stopped me from going any farther by raising her wings and hissing. Toothless was tugging at the chains binding Melina to the chair.
"It's okay, it's going to be okay," I assured the dragon, holding out my hand. She backed away, lowering herself, allowing me to go to Melina. I accidentally stepped on a frozen Berserker, and forced my gaze upward to the captive.
It was hard to even recognize her. Her face had blood trailing down it and she was bruised at the jaw. There were many cuts along her arms and I could see the strange silver culprits forgotten on the floor around her, along with two other bodies.
"Hiccup," she coughed helplessly. I swallowed, starting to cough myself. The Flightmare stood guard at the door while I had Toothless blast the chains. "Dragon-proof chains?!" I yelped. To make matters worse, the chair was metal, and bolted to the floor!
Melina sank back, giving up. I wasn't leaving her. I turned to search the guards for her keys when I heard a sinister voice. "Hello, brother," a voice sneered behind me. I turned slowly as Dagur pointed his knife at my neck. Swallowing, I backed up as he turned it over menacingly. Men filed in behind him with raised cross bows. I raised my hands and the dragons growled. "So nice to see you," Dagur coughed as Melina rebelled. "No! Do whatever you want to me, but don't hurt him!"
"Quiet, prisoner!" Dagur snapped, not moving his glare from me. "Berserkers, put that fire out!" His men obeyed, the smoke hacking at their lungs. The other men followed his next order, "Secure the dragons." I watched as the Flightmare and Toothless shot plasma and mist at the guards.
Only about ten fell before the others leaped onto the dragons and wrestled their snouts to the ground. Toothless snarled, his nostrils glowing purple. "Easy, bud," I said shakily. "Now, Dagur, can we be reasonable about this? I've told you over and over- "I don't care how amazing dragons are, Hiccup," Dagur smirked. I was shocked by how much his appearance had changed-his opinion on dragons was the same.
"Then, what do you want," I asked, my voice unsteady. "First, Berk. Then, world domination!" he laughed. "Just kidding. Berk is fine." He flicked his other hand at me, and his second-in-command snatched at my wrists, chaining them with the same one chains Melina was in.
"You don't have to do this," I protested as the men started leading me away. "You're wrong again, brother Hiccup. I do. Berserkers, let this girl go," I heard him command. I struggled to look back but someone roughly forced my head down.
This was not going to be good.
