Songs: Passing Through (Can't the Future Just Wait) by Kaden MacKay

Lavender's Blue (dilly dilly) from Cinderella

A/N: Hey everyone! Yes I know I've done Lavender's Blue before, but I will explain later in the book why it repeats as it may repeat a few more times. Anyways, please enjoy the next chapter of 8 Days, 8 Letters!

Present Day: July 1899

Jaime's POV

"Let's go," a bull demanded as he opened the door.

They dragged us out one by one shoving us as we walked into the courthouse.

We walked down the stone stairs that were slowly crumbling. The walk was dark and many of us slipped on the uneven stairs. The bull pushed me a little harder than usual and I tripped over my foot.

A pair of arms caught me before I could fall.

I looked up and met the icy eyes of Spot Conlon.

I used him to stabilize myself before continuing to trudge down the stairs.

We ended at a large holding cell clearly reserved for us.

The threw us in there leaving us on the cold, hard floor before locking the door. They didn't say a word. Not even to tell us our court date.

Damn selfish bastards.

I turned over to Race who was holding his head from all the punches he'd been taking.

"You alright Racer?" I asked.

"'Bout as fine as someone can be with their head feeling like it's been trampled by a horse," he groaned.

"At least you don't have to worry about losing any more brains."

"Hey!" he shouted, swatting at me. "I's got brains."

"Did ya leave them in your other pants?"

"If my head wasn't throbbing right now, I'd soak ya."

"Pretty big words for such a little man."

"You're only two inches taller!"

"That's still taller last I checked."

Before Race could say anything Blink interrupted is.

"I'm sorry to interrupt, but we're kind of in a dark cell in a creepy basement" he stated. "So what's plan?"

Everyone looked at me like I was the only one capable of a plan. Well a smart one.

I looked around the room and memories of the dumb situations they had gotten into over the years came to mind.

I guess I really am the only one that can come up with a smart plan.

The newsies began to surround me while I thought of a plan.

"Well they're likely going to fine us or throw us in the Refuge no matter what," I said. "So we just need to be on our best behavior and plead self-defense since they'll likely charge us with assault of law officials. We may still get some form of punishment, but at least it may only be the minimum punishment."

The newsies nodded sadly. I know it's not what they wanted to hear, but I can't lie to them more than I already have.

"Hey, it's gonna be alright," I said, trying to cheer them up. "The future's not set in stone yet. We don't know exactly what will happen."

Blink sat down and leaned his head on the wall.

Kid Blink: Can't the future just wait?
Can't the deadlines come fashionably late?
I could push every goal back
Take control back
If they'd roll back the rate
At which time starts to fly
