Song: Any Way the Wind Blows by Hadestown Original Cast

A/N: Hey everyone! I hope you've had a great week and if not I hope this one is better. Pre-warning I had to use a different format for this song since the people who sing consistently changes. Basically it'll be who is singing and the lyrics they're singing. Anyways here's the next chapter of 8 Days, 8 Letters, which is on time for once. Yay me! Have a fantastic week, good luck on finals if you have them, and enjoy the next chapter of 8 Days, 8 Letters.

Present Day: July 1899

Jaime's POV

"That was that," I finished. "The Soldier and the Poet got better each day. So good that when the Kings fell, the Soldier could take the kingdom and the Poet could start another."

The newsies smiled at me. I closed the journal and put it back into my bag.

"Wait. Where did the Wise King go," Tumblr asked. "You've always told us what happened to him but you've never told us where he went."

"No one knows for sure," I said. "But my guess is he went wherever the wind takes him. Wherever the wind blows."

"What do you mean by that," Wheels asked.

"I mean it exactly how I said it," I replied. "His journey follows the wind."

I could see that they were still confused.

"Let me try to explain it better," I said.

"See..."

Slight flashback to The Day Everything Changed: July 1892

Jaime: [The Wise King] was a hungry young [boy]

A runaway from everywhere [he'd] ever been

[He] was no stranger to the world

No stranger to the wind

Wise King: Weather ain't the way it was before

Ain't no spring or fall at all anymore

It's either blazing hot or freezing cold

Any way the wind blows

Fates: And there ain't a thing that you can do

When the weather takes a turn on you

'Cept for hurry up and hit the road

Any way the wind blows

Wise King: Do you hear that sound

Fates: (Wind comes up move)

Wise King: Move to another town

Ain't no body gonna stick around

Wise King, Fates: When the dark clouds roll

Any way the wind blows

Jaime: You met the fates

Remember them

Wise King: (anybody got a match?)

Jaime, holding up a lit match: Always singing in the back of your mind

Wise King, taking the match: (gimme that)

Jaime: Wherever it was this young [boy] went

The fates were close behind

Wise King: People turn on you just like the wind

Everybody is a fair-weather friend

In the end you're better of alone

Any way the wind blows

Fates: When your body aches to lay it down

When you're hungry and there ain't enough to go 'round

Ain't no length to which a [kid] won't go

Any way the wind blows

Wind comes up

Ooooh

Wise King: And sometimes you think

Fates: Wind comes up

Youuuu...

Wise King: You would do anything

Just to fill your belly full of food

Find a bed that you could fall into

Where the weather wouldn't follow you

Wise King, Fates: Wherever you go

Any way the wind blows

Jaime: Now [the Soldier] was the son of an [angel]

And you know how those [angels] are

Sometimes they [have to] abandon you

And this poor boy

He wore his heart on his sleeve

You might say he was naive to the ways of the world

But he had a way with [swords]

And the [performance] and the [fight]

And he [fought] just like a [wolf]... on a [hunt]

And it [wasn't just] because [The Wise King was] kind

But his mamma was a friend of [his]

And [he] liked to [see] him [train]

And his way of seeing things

So [he] took him underneath [his] wing

And that is where he stayed

Until one day

Present Day: July 1899

Everything changed.

"Did that answer your questions?," I asked.

"Yes," they all said.

"Alright. Good," I smiled. I noticed that the tapping had stopped. Finally. I took my watch from my pocket and checked it. 3:49 am.

"Now, let's all try to get some sleep, shall we," I asked.

The newsies very tiredly nodded in agreement. I put my head on Race's shoulder. Race put his head on Crutchy's shoulder and Crutchy put his head on Race's. Race put his arms around us.

All I know is that when Blink and Mush wake up, they'll have a room full of sleep deprived newsies after them. With that, the newsies and I went off to sleep.
