50. Rin Itoshi angst chaper 14 《final》

The months passed quietly, yet life had transformed for Rin and his friends in ways they hadn’t expected. Slowly but surely, Rin and Baro’s relationship became an open secret. They no longer hid the small, intimate gestures—a hand on Rin’s shoulder during lunch, the way Baro lingered by Rin’s locker after practice, or how he watched over Rin, protective in his own gruff way.

Even Reo had found someone special. He and Nagi, with their easygoing and loyal friendship, had finally crossed the line into something more. They were practically inseparable, and the others often saw them lounging around together, lost in their own world.

And then, winter arrived. It swept in with biting winds, icy breath, and skies painted in pale gray. Despite the chill, the soccer team continued their training on the outdoor field, committed to their drills under the endless winter sky.

It was a particularly cold day, with gusts of wind that cut through even the thickest layers. The team’s breaths fogged the air, and hands were shoved deep into pockets between sprints to keep warm. Rin, however, had made a mistake that morning, distracted by the rush to get out the door. He’d forgotten his jacket.

Out on the field, he tried his best to ignore the cold, his arms wrapped tightly around himself whenever the coach gave them a break. He could feel his skin tingling from the cold, but he pushed through, determined not to let it show. He was tougher than this, or at least, he wanted to be.

Standing nearby, Isagi noticed first. He was talking with Sae between drills when his gaze landed on Rin, who was standing off to the side, his lips faintly blue and his body hunched as he shivered. Isagi’s eyes narrowed, concern flashing through him.

“Rin didn’t bring a jacket?” he murmured, nudging Sae.

Sae followed Isagi’s gaze, watching as his younger brother did his best to look unaffected by the biting cold. Rin’s posture was stiff, his shoulders hunched as he braced himself against the wind. Despite their usual distance, Sae felt a pang of concern and a surprising urge to go to Rin, maybe throw his own jacket over him.

But before either Sae or Isagi could take a step, Baro was already moving toward Rin.

Baro approached silently, his usual steady presence cutting through the haze of cold. Rin didn’t notice him at first, too focused on warming his hands by rubbing them together. When he finally looked up, Baro was standing right in front of him, holding out his hoodie.

“You’re going to freeze out here,” Baro said gruffly, his expression softening as he looked at Rin.

Rin shook his head, ever stubborn. “I’ll be fine. I don’t need it.”

Baro rolled his eyes, his voice dropping to a gentle murmur. “Don’t argue with me. Put it on.”

Before Rin could protest further, Baro reached forward, draping the hoodie over his shoulders and pulling it securely around him. The warmth was immediate, the fabric carrying the comforting, familiar scent of Baro’s cologne. Rin felt his cheeks heat up as he slid his arms into the sleeves, the oversized hoodie falling past his fingertips.

He looked up at Baro, half-grateful, half-embarrassed. “Thanks.”

Baro’s face softened, his usual intensity fading into a rare tenderness. Without warning, he wrapped his arms around Rin, drawing him close into a warm embrace. Rin instinctively snuggled into Baro’s chest, his face hidden in the fabric as he let himself sink into the warmth.

From where he stood, Isagi’s eyes went wide with surprise, and he nudged Sae, who looked equally taken aback. The sight of his little brother, usually so closed off and guarded, leaning into Baro’s embrace was nothing short of astonishing.

“Wow… didn’t think I’d see the day,” Isagi murmured, shaking his head with a small smile.

Sae’s expression was hard to read, but there was a softness in his eyes that hadn’t been there before. He crossed his arms, watching his little brother with a mixture of pride and quiet happiness. Rin had found something—no, someone—to lean on. And that, in its own way, was more than Sae could have hoped for.

As the other players whispered amongst themselves, caught between awe and surprise, Baro pulled back slightly, meeting Rin’s gaze with a smirk.

“Better?” he asked softly.

Rin nodded, cheeks tinged pink as he mumbled, “Yeah… much better.”

“Good,” Baro replied, placing a warm hand on Rin’s shoulder before turning to glance at the others, almost daring anyone to comment.

Reo, standing on the sidelines with Nagi, shot them a thumbs-up, his smile bright and proud. “Rin, you finally learned to accept help!” he called, his tone playful but genuinely happy.

Rin huffed, rolling his eyes. “Yeah, yeah… don’t make a big deal out of it.”

Nagi, lounging beside Reo, shrugged, his own voice lazy but approving. “It’s a good look, Rin. You look… happier.”

A small, shy smile tugged at Rin’s lips, and he glanced at Baro, who nodded in quiet agreement. For the first time in as long as he could remember, Rin felt a sense of belonging, warmth, and love—things he’d never thought he’d experience.

And as they returned to practice, the cold no longer seemed quite so harsh, not with Baro’s hoodie around him and the warmth of Baro’s presence by his side.

The whispers around school about Rin and Baro eventually faded, replaced by a quiet understanding that these two, despite their differences, had found something meaningful in each other. And while Rin had always been someone who stood alone, he now realized that letting someone in wasn’t a weakness; it was the strength he had always needed.

Under that endless winter sky, Rin knew he had found something he’d never imagined he would—love, acceptance, and a future that, for the first time, didn’t feel so cold.
