Rin Itoshi had always been cautious when it came to relationships. He wasn’t the type to wear his heart on his sleeve or throw himself at anyone — especially not someone like Shidou Ryusei. But for reasons Rin himself couldn’t entirely explain, when Shidou started showing interest in him, it felt… different.
At first.
It started with teasing. The kind of relentless, shameless flirting Shidou was known for. Sae had warned him, of course.
“Rin, that guy’s a walking red flag. Stay away.”
But Rin was stubborn. And a little bit lonely, if he was honest. The pressure of Blue Lock, of chasing after his brother’s legacy, it weighed heavy. And Shidou, with his wild grin and shameless confidence, made it easy to forget, even just for a while.
“C’mon, Rin-chan, you act like you hate me, but you don’t. Admit it — you love the attention.”
Shidou would lean in close, lips brushing Rin’s ear, making the younger boy flush deep red and push him away.
“Idiot, shut up. You’re annoying.”
But Rin didn’t entirely hate it.
And for a while, Shidou was… good to him. He’d walk Rin home from training, bring him his favorite drinks, brag about him to other players. He even toned down his more unhinged tendencies when Rin was around. Sae noticed, of course.
“I don’t buy it,” Sae told Rin one evening over video call. “Guys like him don’t change. Not for anyone.”
“You don’t know him,” Rin shot back, annoyed, but his voice lacked conviction.
“I don’t need to. I know his type.”
Sae’s glare through the screen was sharp enough to cut glass. Protective. Furious. But Rin hung up before Sae could lecture him further.
Weeks passed. The honeymoon phase faded. Shidou grew… impatient.
“Why you always so serious, Rin-chan?” Shidou grumbled one night after a match. “Loosen up. You’re boring when you get like this.”
Rin’s stomach twisted. “If I’m so boring, then leave.”
Shidou scoffed. “Tch, whatever.” And he did.
The texts slowed. The calls stopped. The soft touches turned to careless shoulder shoves. The possessive, playful teasing became sharp, frustrated remarks.
Sae could tell.
He noticed it at Rin’s matches. The way Rin’s eyes kept darting to Shidou, looking for something. And the way Shidou barely looked at Rin anymore, unless it was to yell instructions or insult his play.
It came to a head one night after a particularly brutal loss. Rin had played like hell — aggressive, relentless, desperate to prove something. And Shidou? He was nowhere to be found after the match.
Sae, who had come to watch, went looking.
He found Shidou behind the stadium.
With his lips on some girl Sae didn’t recognize. A civilian. Pretty. Laughing at something Shidou whispered in her ear before pulling her closer.
Sae saw red.
He grabbed Shidou by the collar and slammed him against the wall.
“The fuck, Itoshi?!” Shidou barked, shoving at Sae’s grip.
“You piece of shit,” Sae hissed, his voice low, dangerous. “I fucking warned you.”
Shidou rolled his eyes. “What, about Rin-chan? Come on, man. It was fun for a while, but he’s a goddamn downer. Always serious. Always pouting. Can’t even take a joke.”
Sae punched him.
A clean hit to the jaw that sent Shidou stumbling.
“Stay the fuck away from him,” Sae growled. “You don’t get to mess with my brother and walk away from it.”
Shidou wiped blood from his lip, grinning.
“Hah. Overprotective big bro mode, huh? Cute.”
Sae punched him again.
Rin found out later that night.
Sae was waiting outside his apartment.
“What happened to your hand?” Rin asked quietly, seeing the bruised knuckles.
Sae didn’t answer at first. Just sighed, ran a hand through his hair.
“I told you about him,” Sae said. “Didn’t I? I fucking told you.”
Rin’s stomach dropped. He knew. Somehow, before Sae even said it, Rin knew.
“Who was she?” Rin’s voice cracked despite himself.
“Doesn’t matter. He’s out. He’s done. Don’t even look at him tomorrow at practice. I’ll handle it if he tries anything.”
Rin’s chest tightened. He should have listened. He should’ve seen it coming. But… it still hurt.
He didn’t cry. Rin Itoshi didn’t cry.
But Sae pulled him into a rough, awkward hug anyway.
“No one gets to treat you like that,” Sae murmured. “Not while I’m breathing.”
And for the first time in weeks, Rin let himself lean against his brother.
The next day at practice, Shidou showed up with a bruise on his jaw and his usual cocky grin, but when he tried to approach Rin, Sae was already there.
A hand on Shidou’s chest. A silent warning.
And Shidou, for once in his life, backed off.
Because some things weren’t worth losing your teeth over. And Sae Itoshi’s fury was one of them.
Rin didn’t say a word to Shidou. He didn’t need to.
And somehow, having his brother there — knowing Sae would burn the world down before letting anyone hurt him again — made it hurt a little less.
“I told you,” Sae said later that night as they shared silent takeout in Rin’s apartment.
“Yeah, yeah,” Rin muttered. “You were right.”
Sae smirked. “Damn right I was.”
And for the first time in a long while, Rin smiled.
A small one. But it was a start.
