The crowd roared as the players took their positions on the field. The energy was electric, the kind that only came with a big match like this. Isagi Yoichi, always the first to arrive, was already warming up, his sharp eyes scanning the field, calculating strategies and possibilities. His heart raced, not from nerves, but from sheer excitement. He loved the game, lived for it. And today, it felt even more special.
Their opponents had arrived earlier, and something about one of their players tugged at Isagi's subconscious. The tall, lithe figure moved with a familiarity that made Isagi pause. It wasn't until the player turned around, revealing sharp eyes and a stoic face, that the realization struck him like a bolt of lightning.
Itoshi Sae.
Rin's older brother. The prodigy. The one who left, chasing dreams across the seas, leaving Rin in his shadow. A shadow Rin struggled to escape for years.
Isagi's breath hitched as he processed the sight. Sae didn't know. He didn't know about Rin's struggles, his growth, or the love that blossomed between him and Isagi. And he certainly didn't know that Isagi was now dating his little brother.
Sae's eyes scanned the field, locking onto Isagi. There was recognition there but not the warmth of familiarity. It was a cold, calculating stare, one that dissected and analyzed. Isagi met it with calm determination, refusing to let the older Itoshi unsettle him.
Rin will need me today, Isagi thought. His heart clenched at the idea of Rin facing his brother on such a grand stage. He knew how much Rin both revered and resented Sae.
The whistle blew, pulling Isagi from his thoughts. The game had begun.
The first half was brutal. Sae played like a machine, orchestrating his team with precision, dismantling Isagi's team's defenses with calculated ease. Rin, however, was a force of nature, meeting his brother's challenges head-on, his fiery resolve burning brighter with each confrontation.
But fate had its own plans.
It happened fast. Too fast.
One moment, Rin was sprinting down the field, and the next, he was on the ground, clutching his ankle, pain etched across his face. Isagi's heart dropped. He was at Rin's side in an instant, his hand gently brushing against Rin's shoulder.
"Rin! Are you okay?" Isagi's voice trembled, worry overtaking him.
Rin grit his teeth, eyes watering from the pain. "I'm fine," he hissed through clenched teeth, but his body betrayed him.
The medics rushed over, and Isagi reluctantly stepped back, watching as Rin was helped off the field. His mind was a whirlwind of concern and anger. He turned, eyes narrowing on the opposing player who had caused the injury.
It was Sae.
Isagi didn't hesitate. He stormed over, his fists clenched at his sides. "What the hell, Sae?! That was reckless!"
Sae's expression didn't waver, though there was a flicker of something-guilt, perhaps-in his eyes. "It wasn't intentional," he said flatly.
Isagi's anger boiled over. "Do you even care? That's your brother, Sae!"
Sae's eyes widened, surprise flashing across his face. "Brother?" he echoed, his voice softer, almost confused. "Why do you care so much?"
"Because I love him," Isagi shot back without hesitation. "Because he's my boyfriend, and I care about him more than anything."
The silence that followed was deafening. Sae's face was a mask of shock, the weight of Isagi's words sinking in.
That evening, Isagi sat on the edge of Rin's bed, gently applying ice to Rin's swollen ankle. Rin leaned back against the pillows, his usual stoic expression softened by exhaustion and pain.
"I'm sorry," Rin murmured, breaking the silence.
Isagi's hand stilled for a moment. "For what?"
"For worrying you."
Isagi smiled gently, leaning down to press a soft kiss to Rin's forehead. "You don't have to apologize, baby. I'll always worry about you."
Rin's cheeks flushed at the term of endearment. "You're such a sap."
"Only for you, bae," Isagi teased, his voice warm and tender.
They sat in comfortable silence, Isagi's presence soothing Rin's aches more than any medicine could. Eventually, Rin spoke again, his voice quieter, more vulnerable. "Do you think... he knew what he did to me? Back then?"
Isagi's expression darkened. "I don't think he did. But he does now."
The next day, Sae waited outside the training facility. Isagi found him there, standing awkwardly, a rare sight for someone usually so composed.
"I need to talk to Rin," Sae said as soon as he saw Isagi.
Isagi studied him for a long moment before nodding. "Come with me."
Inside, Rin sat with his ankle wrapped, still recovering but determined not to show weakness. When Sae entered, Rin's eyes hardened, but there was a hint of vulnerability that Isagi could see.
Sae approached cautiously. "Rin."
Rin's lips pressed into a thin line. "What do you want?"
Sae sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I didn't know... about you and Isagi. About how much you were struggling. I was too focused on my own path to see what I left behind."
Rin's gaze softened slightly, though his guard remained up. "It's too late for apologies."
Sae nodded, his expression somber. "I know. But I want to try and fix it. If you'll let me."
The room was thick with tension, but Isagi could see the flicker of hope in Rin's eyes. It wasn't a resolution, but it was a start.
As Sae left, Isagi wrapped an arm around Rin's shoulders, pulling him close. "Are you okay?"
Rin leaned into Isagi's embrace, his voice soft. "I think... I will be."
And for the first time in a long time, Rin believed it.
