It had been a perfect evening for Rin. He had spent the day training, feeling the thrill of every kick, every pass, every goal as he imagined Shidou’s smile and the teasing words that would follow. They’d been dating for a while now, and though Shidou was often unpredictable, Rin found comfort in their shared moments. He loved Shidou, and until tonight, he believed Shidou loved him too.

The evening sky was painted with hues of orange and pink as Rin made his way home, a lightness in his steps, already planning on texting Shidou to meet up later. As he approached his house, he noticed two figures standing close by, partially hidden by the shadow of a tall tree. The sight made him pause. His heart sank when he realized who they were—Shidou and… Sae?

Rin's feet felt rooted to the ground as he watched in stunned silence. The scene unfolded before him like a nightmare he couldn’t wake up from. Shidou leaned in, pressing his lips against Sae’s, his brother's lips. The kiss wasn’t just a fleeting mistake; it was intentional, deliberate. It tore at Rin’s heart.

Shidou pulled away first, a sudden jolt in his expression as if sensing something was wrong. His gaze shifted, and his eyes met Rin’s. The world seemed to freeze for a moment. Rin’s tears spilled over, his face crumpling with betrayal. He couldn’t hear Shidou’s stammered words or see the horror in his boyfriend’s eyes. The only thing he knew was that he had to get away, as far away as possible.

He turned and ran, his feet pounding against the pavement, but no matter how fast he ran, he couldn’t outrun the image of that kiss. The image of Shidou, the person he loved, betraying him in the most unforgivable way. And Sae—his own brother—how could he? How could they?

Shidou wanted to chase after Rin, every instinct screaming at him to fix this, to explain. But before he could take more than a step, Sae grabbed his arm. There was confusion in Sae's eyes, as if he didn’t fully grasp what had just happened.

“Why are you going after him?” Sae asked, his voice tight.

Shidou hesitated, torn between following Rin and facing the sudden realization in Sae’s question. He swallowed hard, his voice shaky. “Because... Rin and I—we’re dating. We’ve been together for a while now.”

The impact of those words hit Sae like a freight train. His hand fell from Shidou’s arm, and his face paled, the dots connecting in his mind. Rin, his little brother, had talked to him about his boyfriend, had confided in him about how happy he was, how much he cared for Shidou. And now… now Sae realized the magnitude of his mistake. He had kissed Rin’s boyfriend, not out of malice, but in a moment of weakness. But that didn’t matter now. The damage was done.

Sae's chest tightened as guilt overwhelmed him. “Oh God… Rin…” The realization was too much to bear, and without another word, he took off in the direction Rin had gone, Shidou close on his heels.

They reached Rin’s house, the front door wide open. The sounds of Rin's sobs echoed through the hallway, shattering the silence of the night. The pain in those cries cut deep, carving regret into both of their hearts. Sae reached the door to Rin's room first, his hand trembling as he knocked softly.

“Rin,” Sae called out, his voice laced with regret. “Rin, please… please open the door. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know… I swear, I didn’t know.”

But the crying continued unabated, a painful reminder of the hurt they’d both caused.

Shidou stepped up next to Sae, his own hand pressing against the door, wishing he could reach Rin, hold him, tell him everything that was in his heart. “Rin, I’m sorry. I messed up. I love you, please… let me explain.”

But there was no response beyond the sound of Rin’s tears. It was a wall neither Sae nor Shidou could break through. They shared a look, both recognizing that words were inadequate, that the wounds they’d inflicted would take more than apologies to heal.

Sae stood there for a long moment before finally stepping back. “I’ll give you some space, but I’m not leaving. I’ll be here, Rin. Whenever you’re ready.”

Shidou couldn’t leave, though. His heart wouldn’t let him. He sank to the floor in front of Rin’s door, listening to the heart-wrenching sobs that tore at his soul. Time passed in a blur. Shidou stayed there, refusing to leave even as the hours turned into days. He’d drift in and out of sleep, waking each time with hope that the door might open, that Rin might emerge and give him a chance to make things right.

Sae returned periodically, always with the same hope in his eyes, but Rin never came out. The pain of knowing they had hurt the person they both cared about most lingered between them, a heavy weight they both carried.

One morning, after what felt like an eternity, the crying from Rin’s room finally ceased. Shidou sat up, his heart racing. He leaned against the door, desperation clawing at him. “Rin, please… just talk to me. I’m not going anywhere. I’ll stay here as long as it takes.”

There was silence for a moment, and then the faintest sound of footsteps approaching the door. Shidou held his breath, hope surging through him. But the door didn’t open. Instead, Rin’s voice, hoarse and broken, came through the wood.

“I can’t… I just can’t right now, Shidou. I need time. Please… just go.”

Shidou’s heart shattered at the words, but he nodded, even though Rin couldn’t see him. “Okay… I’ll give you time. But I’m not giving up on us, Rin. I love you too much for that.”

Sae, who had arrived just in time to hear Rin’s words, put a hand on Shidou’s shoulder, offering silent support. The two of them knew that what they’d done couldn’t be undone. They had broken something precious, and it would take time—if it was even possible at all—to mend the pieces.

As they left the house, the weight of their actions hung heavy in the air. Shidou glanced back at the closed door one last time, silently vowing to do whatever it took to make things right, no matter how long it took.

Inside his room, Rin curled up on his bed, staring at the door that separated him from the two people he loved most in the world—the two people who had hurt him the most. And as he lay there, trying to make sense of the pain, he wondered if he’d ever be able to forgive them—or if he even wanted to.
